Ferguson Marine announces further delays to the delivery of GLEN SANNOX and Hull 802

There is more bad news for the community on the Scottish island of Arran, after Port Glasgow-based shipbuilder Ferguson Marine revealed further delays to the delivery of the two LNG hybrid ro-pax ferries that it is building for Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL), for operation on Caledonian MacBrayne’s service from Ardrossan to Brodick.

In his quarterly update to the Scottish government, the shipyard's CEO, David Tydeman has revealed that the delivery of GLEN SANNOX and Hull 802 has been pushed back further due to additional work requested by the UK's Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).

GLEN SANNOX'S sea trials have now been delayed until 2024, which will also delay the launch of Hull 802.

Rederiaktiebolaget Eckerö Q2 2023 results

Turnover increased by 23% to EUR 62.8m (EUR 50.9m) and operating profit amounted to EUR 11.9m (EUR 1.0m), which is the best operating profit for the second quarter ever. The result for the accounting period was EUR 6.9m (EUR -0.2m).

882,209 passengers travelled on the Group's ships, which was 22% more than the same period last year the year (722,917).
The number of shipping units amounted to 44,326, which was 7% more than the same period last year (41,432).

Viking Line Q2 2023 results

Consolidated sales decreased 6.1% to EUR 132.4m during the period 1 April – 30 June 2023 (EUR 141.0m). Operating income totalled EUR 18.0m (EUR 10.1m). Passenger-related revenue decreased 5.7% to EUR 120.7m (EUR 128.0m), while cargo-related revenue was EUR 10.9m (EUR 12.3m) and other revenue was EUR 0.8m (EUR 0.7m). The sales contribution was EUR 101.1m (EUR 106.4m). Operating expenses decreased 16.7% to EUR 76.4m (EUR 91.8m).

Incat Tasmania to deliver the world’s largest battery electric Ship

Australian shipbuilder Incat Tasmania has under construction the largest lightweight battery electric ship so far constructed in the world for delivery to its South American customer, Buquebus. This 130-metre ship will be operated as 100% battery electric and have a battery capacity at over 40MWh, almost four times larger than any battery installation that has been constructed and installed anywhere in the world for the marine transport environment.

The Swedish Competition Authority approves cooperation between Gotlandsbolaget and Viking Line

Viking Line and Gotlandsbolaget announced on 9 August 2023 that they are forming a joint company with the task of developing and offering cruises with BIRKA STOCKHOLM between Stockholm-Mariehamn and Stockholm-Mariehamn-Visby.

The completion of this business transaction and the start-up of the new joint venture are contingent on the approval of the Swedish Competition Authority. The Swedish Competition Authority has today 23 August 2023 announced that they are deciding to leave the concentration without action, which means that the deal is proceeding according to plan.

P&O Ferries to end its Liverpool-Dublin service towards the end of 2023

Unable to find a replacement berth in the UK port of Liverpool for its long-established Liverpool-Dublin service from 2024 onwards, P&O Ferries’ CEO Peter Hebblethwaite announced the closure of the route from towards the end of 2023, as no alternative berth or port could be found.

Finnlines’ new vessel, FINNSIRIUS, debuts in September – special program during the maiden voyage

FINNSIRIUS sets off for its maiden voyage from Naantali via Långnäs to Kapellskär on Friday 15 September 2023. The first passengers will then get to travel on the new vessel. The maiden voyage will feature a special program, and ticket sales have just started.

FINNSIRIUS is the first of Finnlines’ two new freight-passenger vessels in the Superstar-class and will enter the Naantali–Långnäs–Kapellskär route in the autumn. The Superstar vessels will deliver more experiences during the sea voyage.

Stena Line gets the green light for its massive redevelopment of Holyhead Port

Stena Line’s ambitious plans for the redevelopment of Holyhead Port in North Wales have been given the green light by the Welsh government after ministers granted Stena a Holyhead Harbour Revision Order for its Holyhead Gateway scheme after four years of work.

The Revision Order was needed before Stena could move forward with its plans to reclaim 100,000m2 of land from the sea and build a new 320m deepwater general use berth.

Armas Group sells ro-ro VOLCAN DE TENEGUIA to Greece

The Armas Group has has sold the freight ro-ro VOLCAN DE TENEGUIA to Piraeus based Octo Maritime. The 2007-built 1,550 lane metre capacity vessel was handed over to her new owners in Cadiz in early August.

The vessel has been renamed CARIBBEAN FORCE and now flies the flag of the Marshall Islands.

MOU signed between Brittany Ferries, Plymouth City Council and Associated British Ports to develop Millbay Docks

Plymouth City Council, Millbay Docks and the dock’s major customer Brittany Ferries have pledged to work together to support the docks to grow and to work towards Net Zero by signing a Memorandum of Understanding. The move will support Millbay Docks as a key economic driver for Plymouth and work towards the Council’s ambition to become Net Zero by 2030.

大分県、大分第一ホーバードライブ(株)

2023年8月22日、大分県が英国のGriffon Hoverwork Ltd.に約42億円で発注した3隻のホーバークラフトの1番船、Baienが東京港に到着した。

Baienは全長約26m、幅約13m、最大搭載人員80人、最高速力45knots。残るBanri、Tansoは、2024年1月までに引き渡される見込み。船名は「豊後の三賢」、三浦梅園、帆足万里、広瀬淡窓に因む。

運航は「第一交通産業」(北九州市)が設立した「大分第一ホーバードライブ」(大分市)が行ない、大分―大分空港航路に2024年に就航する見込み。

Fjord1 expands its fleet with purchase of two high-speed vessels and ordering of a newbuild

The new generation of high-speed ferries for the city boat routes in Bergen has been ordered. Fjord1 has entered into an agreement with Kystekspressen for the purchase of the 2014-built TERNINGEN and TYRHAUG. In addition, the company has signed a contract with Brødrene Aa for the delivery of a newbuilding.

Gotlandsbolaget Q2 2023 interim report 2023 – DROTTEN at the Fayard Shipard for repairs

Revenues amounted to SEK 564.2 million (760.0). The costs amounted to -555.9 MSEK (-810.8). Revenues and costs during the quarter were lower than the previous year, mainly as a result of items relating to Stockholms Reparationsvarv and Hansa Destinations, as well as for ships sold during the second half of 2022 and the first half of 2023. Gotlandsbolaget also announced that DROTTEN will be out of service until at least 27 August following the damage to its propeller shaft last week. The ferry arrived at the Danish Fayard shipyard on 17 August for repairs. Passengers affected will be rebooked to VISBY and GOTLAND.

Nortal and MODI partner to streamline security and create seamless passenger experience at ports

Nortal and MODI GmbH, a supplier of biometrical vision and entrance solutions, announced a cooperation to enhance Nortal’s existing Smart Port solution to increase efficiency, create frictionless passenger experience and security at ports.

Naikai Zosen delivered a 120-metre ro-pax to Taiwan

A new ro-pax ferry for Taiwan Navigation was delivered by Japan’s Naikai Zosen Setoda shipyard. The new ro-pax named PENGHU entered service between Kaohsiung, Taiwan and Magong, Penghu Island on 14 August.

PENGHU measures about 119.99 meters, with a beam of 21.00 meters and draft of 8.00 meters. She can carry up to 632 passengers, as well as 80 cars, four buses, containers, etc. Two Daihatsu 8DKM-36e type diesel engines (4,400kW x 2) provide a service speed of 19.3 knots.

Washington State Ferries awards contract to convert largest vessels to hybrid-electric power

Washington State Ferries announced contract with the Vigor shipyard for the conversion of up to three Jumbo Mark II-class ferries to hybrid-electric power. Vigor will also update aging propulsion system controls to extend the life expectancy of these vessels.

This September, Vigor will start work on WENATCHEE at its Harbor Island shipyard in Seattle. The ferry is expected to re-enter service on the Seattle/Bainbridge route next summer. Vigor will then begin converting TACOMA in 2024. WSF has the option to extend the contract to convert a third ship, PUYALLUP, in 2025.

Vancouver Island Ferry Co’s HULLO fast ferry service between Nanaimo and Vancouver started

The much-anticipated high-speed passenger ferry service HULLO, operated by Vancouver Island Ferry Co (VIFC), between downtown Nanaimo and downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, across the Strait of Georgia, was to have started on 14 August. However, a power outage in Nanaimo and high winds of 20-33 knots saw the first two days of the new service cancelled.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen signs letter of intent for four 9,350 CEU methanol-capable and ammonia-ready PCTC’s

Wallenius Wilhelmsen has signed a letter of intent for delivery of four 9,350 CEU methanol-capable and ammonia-ready vessels and individual options for an additional eight vessels. The four vessels will be delivered from mid-2026 and onwards by Jinling Shipyard (Jiangsu).

Hornblower secures new USD 405 million NYC Ferry operating contract

US commuter ferry specialist Hornblower Group will continue to operate New York City’s NYC Ferry service after securing the new operating contract after it was rebid. Hornblower’s existing contract expires at the end of September this year.

The new USD 405 million contract is for a five-year period and carries two three-year expansion options.

DFDS Q2 2023 interim report and July volumes

DFDS announced its Q2 results for 2023. Revenue reached DKK 6.9 billion (DKK 7.2 billion) and EBITDA decreased 5% to DKK 1.4 billion. Passenger numbers were up 9%.

• Result below Q2 2022 due to temporary boost of Channel earnings in Q2 2022
• Logistics acquisitions performing well
• EBITDA outlook raised to DKK 4.8-5.2 billion (DKK 4.5-5.0 billion) on 14 August 2023

Long-awaited freight ro-ro service starts between El Salvador and Costa Rica

A long-awaited freight ro-ro service between the Central American countries of El Salvador and Costa Rica, talked about for the past seven years, became a reality on 10 August when the 1,925 lanemetre capacity ro-ro BLUE WAVE HARMONY sailed from the Pacific coast El Salvador port of La Unión to Caldera in Costa Rica, a distance of 360 nautical miles.

AMHS announces new long-term plan to 2045 for fleet and terminal upgrades

The state-owned Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) has announced its latest long-term plans for its fleet and terminal upgrades programmes. Phase 1 has just been completed, with Phases 2 and 3 being completed in spring and summer 2024 respectively.

No new ferries will join the current nine-vessel fleet between 2024 and 2026. However, new vessel projects include the following:

• Finalising the design of the TUSTUMENA Replacement Vessel (TRV) project and building the new ferry, which will replace the current 59-year old ro-pax TUSTUMENA.

• Designing the Mainline Replacement Vessel (MRV) and starting construction of the new ferry. This newbuilding is expected to be ready for service by the end of 2027.

• Designing and building a new electric ferry to replace the 19-year old LITUYA. This newbuilding ferry is expected to enter service in 2027.

No ferries are expected to leave the AMHS fleet until 2027.

Godby Shipping secures new charters for BALTIC BRIGHT, MIMER and MISTRAL

Mariehamn-based ro-ro specialist Godby Shipping reports a very strong ro-ro market with good charter rates, as it announces new charters for three of its fleet.

BALTIC BRIGHT's current charter to Holmen Paper has been extended by a further 12 months to the end of 2024, with an option to further extend the agreement for all of 2025.

MIMER's current charter to French container shipping giant CMA CGM has been extended until December 2024.

MISTRAL, currently on charter to Faroe Island operator Smyril Line until December this year, will be chartered in 2024 to Spanish ro-ro operator Suardiaz Shipping Line and will start the company's freight ro-ro service between Vigo and Liverpool.
