MacGregor ro-ro equipment for two of the world´s first PCTCs using methanol
MacGregor has been chosen to deliver ro-ro equipment for two of the world's first methanol-fueled PCTCs for China Merchant Energy Shipping to be built at China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. in China.The order was booked into Cargotec’s 2023 third quarter orders. The vessels are to be delivered to the owner between the third and fourth quarter of 2025.
Torghatten Nord sells RØST to the Icelandic government
Norwegian ferry operator Torghatten Nord has sold its 1991-built ro-pax ferry RØST to the Icelandic government for an undisclosed price. The ferry has already arrived in Iceland to start its service.
RØST will replace the 1979-built ferry BALDUR on the year-round service linking Stykishólmur-Flatey-Brjánslækur, on the west coast of Iceland. This service is operated by Eimskip Seatours.
bound4blue to install three suction sails on VILLE DE BORDEAUX
Airbus will equip one of the vessels it uses to transport aircraft subassemblies, chartered from shipowner Louis Dreyfus Armateurs, with a wind-assisted propulsion technology that captures wind energy to generate thrust and, therefore, delivers savings in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The eSAILR, developed by the Spain-based firm bound4blue, creates as much as six to seven times more lift than a conventional rigid sail.
P&O Ferries reported strong summer traffic
P&O Ferries saw rises across its network during the summer. From June to August 2023, a 71 per cent increase was seen in freight volumes on the Dover-Calais route compared to the summer of 2022, equalling to a market share of 46 per cent. An overall 35 per cent growth in freight volumes across all routes was also seen.
As well as the increases in freight, P&O Ferries also received a boost in passenger numbers. Summer holiday passengers flocked to the new P&O PIONEER as the Dover-Calais route saw a 48 per cent increase in passengers compared to the previous year, with 1.3 million passengers travelling across the Channel with P&O Ferries from June to August.
Discover Ferries welcomes a new Chair and Vice Chair
Industry body, Discover Ferries, has appointed Peter Griffiths and Jo Harvey as the new chair and vice chair. The organisation represents 13 passenger ferry operators to proactively promote ferry travel to consumers and share industry best practice.
Peter Griffiths is responsible for brand and marketing at Caledonian MacBrayne, the UK’s largest ferry fleet which services 50 routes with 35 vessels on the west coast of Scotland.
Wingsail designer and manufacturer AYRO secures EUR 19 million series B financing round
AYRO, the designer and manufacturer of the OceanWingsR wingsail solution announced the close of a EUR 19.2 million series B round, led by Blue Ocean, managed by SWEN Capital Partners, which brings the total funding for the company to over EUR 30 million.
In July, AYRO installed four 40 metre high / 363 m2 OceanWingsR 363 wingsails on the CANOPEE, a vessel dedicated to transporting Ariane 6 space launch system components from Europe to French Guiana, which will enable a 30% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions over its regular route.
Brittany Ferries announces the use of the Wisamo inflatable sail prototype on MN PELICAN
The crew of the MN PELICAN is preparing to use, starting this week, the Wisamo (Wing Sails Mobility) inflatable sail prototype from the Michelin group. The wing is expected to be used for 6 to 8 hours over a 30-hour crossing. The Wisamo inflatable sail is a wing measuring 100 m2 which was installed on the ship in November 2022.
The Michelin Group estimates that the wing will reduce the ship's fuel consumption by up to 20% on average. The trials in the Bay of Biscay will focus more on the efficiency and functioning of the prototype.
Meyer Werft starts production of ASUKA III cruise ship for NYK Cruises
Construction of the new LNG-powered cruise ship for NYK Cruises, a company of the Japanese shipping group NYK, has now begun at Meyer Werft with the symbolic steel cutting ceremony. The ship will be named ASUKA III and is scheduled for delivery in 2025.
The 52,200 gt ASUKA III will have a length of 230 metres and a width of 29.8 metres, it will offer space for 744 passengers.
Gotlandsbolaget invests in biogas on Gotland
Gotlandsbolaget invests and becomes a partner in EnergiSkiftet Sverige AB on Gotland. The investment lays the foundation for continued aggressive growth of the biogas investment on Gotland and enables increased access to biogas. EnergiSkiftet Sverige AB is a parent company of Biogas Gotland, BroGas and Gotlands Fastbränsle and Gotlandsbolaget thereby becomes a minority owner.

BALTIC QUEEN returns to regular traffic following a two-week maintenance break
Tallink Grupp’s Tallinn-Stockholm route vessel BALTIC QUEEN will return to her regular route and operations on 15 September 2023. The vessel which will host the Shippax Ferry Conference in 2024 has spent two weeks at the BLRT shipyard in Naantali, Finland for maintenance and upgrades.
- Complete overhaul of the Grill House restaurant with a completely new look and feel
- Carpet changes, bathroom updates and general updates and refreshments to both passenger and public areas
- Re-bladed propellers for an expected 10-13% emissions-saving
- A graphene-based hull paint has been added to reduce the water resistance significantly

La Meridionale takeover by CMA CGM details released
CMA CGM officially took over La Meridionale on 31 May, but details of the deal were at the time kept under wraps.
La Meridionale's former owner – STEF Group- being a listed company, the amount paid by CMA CGM has now been released in STEF Group's regulated financial information for H1 2023.
SEK 33 million financial support proposed for Gotland's ferry traffic
Freight and ticket prices for ferry traffic to and from Gotland have increased. To ease the situation, the Swedish government proposes financial support of SEK 33 million for 2023 for ferry traffic to and from Gotland. The aid is subject to rapid approval from the European Commission.
Isles of Scilly Steamship Group names Piriou as the preferred builder for its its new passenger and cargo vessels
The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group has named Piriou as its preferred shipbuilder to build and deliver two new vessels for the Group. In April, the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group announced a private financing solution for the replacement of the vessels and the intent to select a preferred shipyard. This announcement continues the next stage of the Group’s plan.
The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group and Piriou will commence detailed design work with the intention of signing contracts in October 2023 for the new SCILLONIAN IV passenger ship and a new cargo vessel to replace the current GRY MARITHA.
Wärtsilä solutions chosen for world’s first methanol fuelled hybrid ro-ro vessels
Wärtsilä will supply an integrated hybrid propulsion system for two new hybrid ro-ro vessels. The ships are being built at the China Merchants Jinling shipyard (Weihai) Co., Ltd for Stena RoRo. The ships will be the world’s first methanol fuelled hybrid ro-ro vessels and will operate in the Stena Line Irish Sea system. Part of the order was booked by Wärtsilä in Q2 2023, while the remaining order was booked in Q3 2023.
Scandlines’ new zero direct emissions ferry approaching launching
Preparations are running at full speed full speed: at the Cemre shipyard in Turkey and at the ferry terminals in Puttgarden and Rødby, everything is currently being prepared for the deployment of Scandlines’ new zero direct emissions freight ferry. In the fourth quarter of 2023, the ferry will be launched.
In 2019, Scandlines invested in a 50 kV / 25 MW power cable to Rødbyhavn. Now Scandlines is investing in a 30 kV / 15 MW power cable including transformer and charging station for the port of Puttgarden. As of 2025, this will reduce the charging time to just 12 minutes in each port and allow the ferry to cover the 18.5 km between Puttgarden and Rødby in 45 minutes with zero direct emissions.
Smyril Line expands fleet with SEAGARD from Bore
Smyril Line has purchased the ro-ro ship SEAGARD from Bore Ltd. The vessel will be renamed GLYVURSNES and handed over in the first week of January 2024.
GLYVURSNES will replace the time-chartered Godby Shipping vessel MISTRAL (a sister ship to SEAGARD) and will go into regular service between Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, Þórlakshöfn in Iceland and Hirtshals in Denmark.
When Glyvursnes enters service, Smyril Line will own all 6 vessels in its fleet.
DFDS August volumes: Freight closing in further on 2022, passengers up 3%
Total freight volumes in August 2023 were 4.6% below 2022. Volumes were 1.6% below 2022 adjusted for Channel. The number of passengers increased 2.8% driven by more passengers in all three passenger areas.
For the last twelve months 2023-22, the total transported freight lane metres decreased 10.9% to 38.7m from 43.4m in 2022-21. The decrease was 4.2% adjusted for Channel.
For the last twelve months 2023-22, the total number of passengers increased 48% to 4.4m from 3.0m in 2022-21.
GBP 19.8m grant for Portsmouth International Port decarbonisation project
Portsmouth International Port has been awarded GBP 19.8m from the Zero Emissions Vessels and Infrastructure competition (ZEVI), funded by UK Government and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK. The grant will allow them to embark on a major decarbonisation project with Brittany Ferries, alongside the University of Portsmouth, MSE International, B4T, IOTICS and Swanbarton.
