Viking Line 2023 Q3 financial results

Viking Line had sales amounting to EUR 152.9 million (EUR 170.4 million) in Q3, which gave an operating income of EUR 35.3 million (EUR 26.9 million). During the first nine months of the year, 3,818,810 (3,726,104) passengers sailed on the company’s vessels and total cargo volume reached 93,565 cargo units (87,408).

Tallink Grupp 2023 Q3 financial results

Tallink Grupp published its 2023 Q3 financial results which revealed a turnover of EUR 240.7 million (EUR 255.6 million) and EBITDA EUR 82.1 million (EUR 67.7 million). 1,775,821 passengers were carried (1,893,603). The company had two vessels less operating on the routes in Q3 2023 compared to the previous year and made 16.6% less trips compared to the same period last year as a result (1,709 trips in Q3 2023 vs 2,050 trips in Q3 2022).

Eckerö Line: The number of passengers grew significantly in January-September 2023

Eckerö Line's passenger numbers have increased sharply during the first three quarters of 2023. The company operates the Helsinki-Tallinn route and the total passenger growth increased by 16 percent and the number of passengers thus exceeded 1.6 million. It will be correspondingly reflected in the financial result. Especially pleasing for Eckerö Line is that FINLANDIA has cumulatively carried the most passengers this year of all ships on the Helsinki-Tallinn route.

Royal Caribbean Group Q3 results

Royal Caribbean Group reported its third quarter results. Total revenues were USD 4.2 billion (USD 3.0 billion), Net Income was USD 1.0 billion (USD 33.0 million), and adjusted EBITDA was USD 1.7 billion (USD 742.3 million).

Bookings remained strong throughout the third quarter, significantly exceeding 2019 levels.

Brittany Ferries summer traffic figures released

Brittany Ferries published its passenger and freight traffic results for the period June to September 2023. Total number of passengers transported reached 1,090,254, up from 1,046,761 in 2022, but down from 1,259,587 in 2019.

Airbus selects Louis Dreyfus Armateurs for new low-emission transatlantic vessels

Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) has been selected by Airbus to renew its entire fleet of chartered vessels that transport aircraft subassemblies between production facilities in Europe and the United States with three new 170-metre ro-ro vessels, supported by wind-assisted rotor sails and powered by dual-fuel engines capable of running on maritime diesel oil and e-methanol.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen firms up order for four 9,300 CEU methanol-capable and ammonia-ready PCTC’s

Wallenius Wilhelmsen announced that the previous LOI for four (+8 options) 9,300 CEU methanol-capable and ammonia-ready PCTC’s has been firmed up with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard.

The contract for these Deltamarin-designed Shaper Class vessels was signed 24 October, with the four vessels to be delivered from mid-2026 and onwards.

Several European ferry operators suffered a coordinated cyber attack

On Thursday 19 October, several European ferry operators suffered a coordinated DDOS cyber attack, which brought many websites and online bookings down.

One of the affected companies was Viking Line. According to them, their websites and booking systems were not up and running again until the day after at 11.30.

TT-Line’s MARCO POLO ran aground

In the morning of 22 October at 03.25 Swedish time, TT-Line’s MARCO POLO ran aground some 5 nm SW of its destination port, Karlshamn, Sweden, with 41 passengers and 30 crew members. MARCO POLO suffered a hull breach following the grounding and so far more than 14,000 litres of oil has been collected along the coast. All passengers were safely evacuated.

As of 27 October, MARCO POLO is still grounded. Two crew members have been detained and charged with negligence in maritime traffic.

BEMAC Corporation in partnership with Mitsui & Co to acquire 100% of The Switch group

BEMAC Corporation announced that it has agreed to acquire shares in The Switch Engineering Oy and its group companies, a manufacturer of permanent magnet machines (PMM), DC distribution solutions (DC-Hub), high-power AC drives (single drives) and high-speed induction motors, in partnership with Mitsui & Co., Ltd.

DFDS September volumes: Freight 2% lower, passengers 9% higher

Total freight volumes in September 2023 were 1.9% below 2022 while the number of passengers increased 9.4% driven by primarily more Channel passengers. The number of cars increased 0.6%.

For the last twelve months 2023-22, the total transported freight lane metres decreased 10.5% to 38.6m from 43.1m in 2022-21. The decrease was 4.4% adjusted for Channel.

The total number of passengers increased 37% to 4.5m for the last twelve months, 2023-22, from 3.2m in 2022-21.

Sallaum Lines opts for Wärtsilä’s decarbonisation programme

Wärtsilä’s decarbonisation programme will be applied to two PCTC vessels operated by Sallaum Lines DMCC Dubai. Based on analysis and modelling, the programme will be tailored to these specific vessels so that the right solutions can be selected for optimal sustainability. Sallaum is the first Middle East operator to take advantage of this service. The order was booked by Wärtsilä in August 2023.

Elomatic to improve the energy efficiency of CROWN SEAWAYS

DFDS has selected Elomatic to develop and deliver its Elogrid solution on the Copenhagen-Oslo ferry CROWN SEAWAYS to improve energy efficiency and reduce its carbon emissions. DFDS will manage the installation of Elogrids during the annual drydocking at Fayard, which takes place in January 2024.

VICTORIA I starts the Tallinn-Helsinki route on 12 October

Tallink Grupp will launch its vessel VICTORIA I on the company’s route between Tallinn and Helsinki with a daily departure from each capital starting from Thursday, 12 October 2023. Adding VICTORIA I to operate on the route, will allow Tallink to reopen the popular 22-hour cruise service between Tallinn and Helsinki and also restores the company’s daily departures between to pre-pandemic levels, offering altogether 14 departures between the two Nordic capitals every day.

Moby selects Kongsberg Maritime for emission-saving propulsion upgrade on five vessels

Kongsberg Maritime has won a contract to upgrade the propulsion systems on five vessels for Italian operator Moby. The vessel upgrades will together reduce CO2 emissions by more than 30,000 tonnes per year. Three of the ships, the MOBY VINCI, SHARDEN and MOBY AKI, will all receive a Promas Lite propulsion system, which combines rudder and propeller into one propulsion unit. Two further ships, the MOBY WONDER and MOBY TOMMY, will each receive re-bladed controllable pitch Kongsberg Kamewa propellers as part of their upgrade.

Sicily and Fincantieri sign contract for new ro-pax

A new ro-pax, fully owned by the Sicilian Region will provide service to Lampedusa and Pantelleria. Sicilian Regional President Renato Schifani and Fincantieri CEO and Managing Director Pierroberto Folgiero signed the contract for the construction of the ro-pax on 9 October at the Palazzo d’Orleans, at the presence of Regional Councillor for Infrastructure and Mobility, Alessandro Aricò, for a base bid amount of nearly EUR 120 million.

Helsinki and Tallinn ports, cities and ferry companies sign MoU to accelerate zero emissions

A Green Corridor MoU has been signed by representatives on both sides of the Gulf of Finland to ensure and accelerate the creation of a climate neutral customer journey and maritime green corridor between Helsinki – Tallinn and Vuosaari – Muuga connections. The signing partners of this MoU are the cities and the ports of Helsinki and Tallinn, Rederi AB Eckerö, Tallink Grupp and Viking Line, Ministry of Climate, Estonia, and it is strongly supported by Ministry of Transport and Communications, Finland.

Stena Line discontinues route between Nynäshamn and Hanko from 20 October

Stena Line announced the discontinuation of its route between Nynäshamn in Sweden and Hanko in Finland. The main reason being failing demand from freight customers due to the development of the current geopolitical situation. The route will operate until 20 October, when both vessels on the route will be redeployed in the charter market or within the Stena Line fleet.

To the delight of the fine dining enthusiasts travelling onboard Tallink Grupp’s vessels this autumn, Tallink Grupp’s culinary fleet presents the new tasting menu Menu Nordic French Fusion, where the finest Scandinavian autumnal ingredients meet the classic culinary tradition of the French cuisine.

The new 5-course set menu is available at the Gourmet restaurant onboard the company’s vessel BALTIC QUEEN, operating between capital cities of Tallinn and Stockholm; and at the Bon Vivant restaurant onboard vessels SILJA SYMPHONY and SILJA SERENADE, operating on the company’s Helsinki - Stockholm route.

TYCHO BRAHE rebranded and refurbished

The first ship rebranded to the new Öresundslinjen brand has been redelivered. The fully-electric TYCHO BRAHE also received an interior makeover.

商船三井クルーズ(株)

2023年10月12日、商船三井クルーズは、ブランド名を「Mitsui Ocean Cruises」とし、2024年12月に投入する船の名前を「Mitsui Ocean Fuji」とすると発表した。
