Fjord Line expands its services by launching new departures
Fjord Line launches a new evening departure on the Hirtshals-Kristiansand route. In addition, Fjord Line strengthens its services by offering a domestic nightly route between Kristiansand, Stavanger, and Bergen. With these upgrades, Fjord Line will offer a year-round evening departure between Hirtshals and Kristiansand, the shortest route between Denmark and Norway.
Fjord Line’s ferries, STAVANGERFJORD and BERGENSFJORD, will sail the additional evening departure between Hirtshals and Kristiansand. From Kristiansand, the ships will sail to Stavanger on the new domestic night route. From Stavanger, the journey continues to Bergen.
Ekeri transports its cargo emissions neutrally with Wasaline
Trailer manufacturer Ekeri and Wasaline have deepened their cooperation. Since the beginning of this year, Ekeri has purchased an additional service called "Green Transport" from Wasaline, which means minimal CO2 emissions on all their transports on Wasaline.
Wasaline allocates battery operation for all Ekeri's transports across Kvarken. AURORA BOTNIA uses 2.3 MWh batteries, which corresponds to about 5% of the total energy for a crossing. Thus, Wasaline can allocate a certain number of units that are transported over with the energy obtained from the batteries.
Toyota’s growth fund Invests in Corvus Energy
Corvus Energy announced that they have secured an investment from Woven Capital, Toyota’s growth fund, to accelerate the development of its growing product portfolio in battery storage and hydrogen fuel cells, and to support expansion into new geographies. Woven Capital invests alongside strategic investors including BW Group, Equinor Ventures, Hydro and Shell Ventures.
Interferry to host joint Africa Ferry Safety seminar with IMO
Global trade association Interferry has partnered with the IMO to organise and co-host a seminar on ferry safety in Africa. Taking place on 16-17 April 2024 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the seminar furthers Interferry´s commitment to reducing casualties in developing nations by promoting the highest maritime safety standards.
OCEAN EXPLORER and OCEAN ODYSSEY return to operation
SunStone Maritime Group announced the reactivation of two Infinity Class Expedition vessels with multi-year charters signed for the OCEAN EXPLORER and the OCEAN ODYSSEY. The OCEAN EXPLORER will return to polar cruising in October 2024, when Quark Expeditions, a long-term client of SunStone, adds the vessel to its fleet of expedition vessels. The OCEAN ODYSSEY will operate outside the cruise market.
Incat Crowther to design new passenger ferry for US operator Yankee Freedom
Incat Crowther has been commissioned by US shipbuilder Gladding Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation to design a new 300-passenger, high-speed catamaran for US operator Yankee Freedom. The new vessel, YANKEE FREEDOM IV, will replace the 250-passenger YANKEE FREEDOM III, which was also designed by Incat Crowther.
Like its predecessor, YANKEE FREEDOM IV will provide service on the route between Key West in Florida and the Dry Tortugas National Park.
‘Duck Tail’ installation on PONT-AVEN is expected to improve fuel economy by 10%
A ‘duck tail’ has been added to Brittany Ferries’ flagship vessel, PONT-AVEN, as part of her annual technical stop. The work has increased the ship’s length by around three metres, improving hydrodynamic performance, resulting in improved fuel economy by around 10 per cent when PONT-AVEN returns to service.
Brittany Ferries has also turned to its drive-train partner, Wärtsilä, to boost efficiency further, the partners are investigating improved propeller designs. This could lead to a further improvement of around 5% of propulsion efficiency when retro-fitted to PONT-AVEN at a later date.
Austal to build Incat Crowther designed catamaran for Rottnest Fast Ferries
Austal Australasia has been awarded a contract to construct a 32-metre catamaran for Rottnest Fast Ferries, based in Hillarys, Western Australia. Collaborating with vessel designer Incat Crowther, Austal will commence construction of the aluminium catamaran at the company’s Philippines shipyard in the first quarter of 2024.
The 32-metre aluminium catamaran will have a capacity for up to 400 passengers and five crew seated over three decks, and extensive cargo space available for passenger’s bicycles and baggage securely stored on two decks. With 2 x 1,029kW MAN D2862 diesel engines driving fixed pitch propellers, the vessel will have an operating speed of up to 25 knots on the 45 minute journey from Hillarys Boat Harbour to Rottnest Island.
Seikan Ferries took delivery of HAYABUSA III and sold HAYABUSA 3
Japan’s Seikan Ferry has taken delivery of the new HAYABUSA III from Hakodate Dock, which will replace the 2000-built HAYABUSA 3 on the Aomori-Hakodate route. HAYABUSA 3, meanwhile has been sold to Greece’s Saronic Ferries.
The new HAYABUSA III is 14m longer than the old HAYABUSA 3 and can take 300 passengers compared to 105.
Before taking service for Saronic Ferries, the old HAYABUSA 3 will have its passenger areas expanded in Perama.
Stena Line records a record number of Danish ski travelers to Sweden in 2024
Danish ski travelers are flocking to Swedish ski resorts like never before, something that can be confirmed by both Stena Line and SkiStar, the leading player in ski tourism in Scandinavia. Already during the first half of January, Stena Line has reported an increase in the number of ski travelers by 11 percent. Together with the 61 percent increase at the end of 2023 for this year's ski holidays, Stena Line is now confident that 2024 will be a record year.
Two Moby ships chartered out
The MOBY DADA and MOBY ZAZA have both been chartered out. MOBY DADA will serve for Algerie Ferries between Alger and Alicante. The vessel has been repainted in Algerie Ferries colours, indicating a longer charter. MOBY ZAZA, on the other hand, is on a short-term charter to Jadrolinija for the company’s route between Split and Ancona.
BV Solutions M&O delivers efficiency and emissions forecast application to Brittany Ferries
Bureau Veritas Solutions Marine & Offshore (BV Solutions M&O) has developed and now delivered a ‘Fleet Energy and Emissions Forecast‘ tool to Brittany Ferries.
Brittany Ferries approached Bureau Veritas Solutions (BVS, looking for support in forecasting performance, fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions across their fleet. Brittany Ferries wanted each department to be able to meet CII and EU ETS requirements and, in the longer term, to map out the most efficient vessel utilisation, capacity planning, route planning, retrofit scheduling, timetabling and voyage management fleet-wide.

The market's most powerful charging station, DFDS Dock & Drive, has been put into operation in Arendal at Hisingen in Gothenburg. The facility consists of a total of 40 charging points for heavy trucks and has a capacity of 45,600 kW.
The charging infrastructure for heavy trucks is a critical factor for the green conversion of heavy truck traffic. Now the logistics giant DFDS has taken matters into its own hands and built what will be Sweden's most powerful charging station for heavy electric trucks.
Build contract for new Isles of Scilly vessels signed
The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group (ISSG), the primary provider of passenger and freight transport to the Isles of Scilly, has signed a contract with shipbuilder Piriou for two new ships that will be delivered in 2026.
The Group, which operates passenger and cargo links between Penzance and St Mary's, as well as an airline with flights to the islands year-round, has signed contracts for a new 600-seat passenger vessel, SCILLONIAN IV, and a freight vessel.
Passenger travel on the upturn on Finnlines’ ships
The number of private passengers increased by over 17 per cent in 2023 compared with 2022 for Finnlines. During the year, the company’s first of two Superstar-class ro-pax vessels, FINNSIRIUS, entered the route between mainland Finland, Åland and Sweden.
The number of passengers, including truck drivers and private passengers, totalled 695,000 in 2023, an increase by 7 per cent. Leisure travel went up by over 17 per cent on Finnlines’ ships in 2023, a significant increase compared with the previous year. The greatest growth was on the route between mainland Finland, Åland and Sweden, 49 per cent, followed by the route between Finland and Germany, increase 11 per cent.
Eckerö Line's passenger volume passed two million for the first time
Eckerö Line passed the milestone of over two million passengers for the first time in 2023. The freight operations also grew significantly, as did Eckerö Line's market share of the total freight market on the Helsinki-Tallinn route. Among other things, FINBO CARGO’s renewed timetables contributed to the positive development of freight operations.
Tallink Silja Line’s new Menu Nordic highlights flavours and local small producers from Estonian islands
Tallink Silja Line launched a new five-course tasting menu Menu Nordic for the dining enthusiasts travelling onboard the company’s cruise ferries operating on Tallinn-Stockholm and Helsinki-Stockholm routes. The new tasting menu Menu Nordic “Inspired by Estonian Islands”, created by the Chefs de Cuisine of the company’s vessel BALTIC QUEEN, Merike Kald and Maarjo Rang, is available onboard until 21 May 2024.
Damen Shipyards wins contract for four, fully electrically operated, passenger car ferries to BC Ferries
Damen Shipyards has won the contract to build and supply four, fully electrically operated, passenger car ferries for BC Ferries. These will be used for short-range services in the coastal waters of the Canadian province of British Columbia (BC). This order will take the total number of ferries that Damen has supplied to BC Ferries in recent years to 10. However, these latest additions will be the first to operate using 100% electrical power.
The vessels will be based on Damen’s double-ended Island-class RoRo 8117 E3 model. Each will be capable of carrying up to 47 vehicles and 390 passengers. Battery packs with a capacity of 2,000 kilowatts will supply the electricity for the power trains.
Orkney Ferries on a new journey with Hogia Ferry Systems
Orkney Ferries, a Scottish inter-island ferry operator, has signed an agreement with Hogia Ferry Systems for a replacement of their reservation and ticketing system.
Hogia Ferry Systems will implement their reservation system, BOOKIT, during Spring 2024.
Niclas Blomström, Managing Director at Hogia Ferry Systems says: “For 15 years, we have been a proud partner to (Serco) Northlink in Orkney and we are excited getting the opportunity to now partner up with Orkney Ferries. We know that our modern platform, to start with, is far more capable and user friendly than their current system. It will enable Orkney Ferries to improve on both their service level and their customer offerings.
“Going forward, we will together, and with other parties, really make a difference in the Orkney Ferries’ customer experience”, he concludes.
VIKING CINDERELLA returning to Helsinki with a new red look
In March, VIKING CINDERELLA will return to service between Helsinki and Stockholm after a makeover. The vessel, which was previously painted white, has had its sides painted bright red at the shipyard in Naantali, where its interiors have also undergone an extensive refurbishment. The investment in technical upgrades will reduce the vessel’s carbon dioxide emissions by 2,500 tonnes a year.
Record 2023 for Bornholmslinjen
2023 set a record for Bornholmslinjen with its routes to and from Bornholm. 1,993,966 passengers travelled back and forth on the three routes. That is almost 46,000 more than in the previous record, year 2022.
583,943 cars were transported in 2023-about 10,000 more than in the previous record year, also in 2022.
About 2,000 fewer lorries were carried compared to 2022, totalling at 45,345.

Porto Santo Line transported more than 410,000 passengers on its route between the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo, surpassing the previous record of 361,275 in 2019. Porto Santo Line operates the route with the 2003-built LOBO MARINHO which has a capacity of 1,100 passengers and 145 cars.
DFDS december volumes: freight 2% lower, passengers 8% higher
DFDS total freight volumes in December 2023 were 2.4% below 2022. In 2023, the total transported freight lane metres decreased 7.9% to 38.4m from 41.7m in 2022. The decrease was 4.2% adjusted for Channel. The number of passengers in December increased 8.1% and in 2023, the total number of passengers increased 19.4% to 4.5m from 3.8m in 2022.
