Scandlines selects suppliers for electrification of Fehmarn Belt ferries
Scandlines reached another milestone on the road to electrification of the Puttgarden-Rødby ferries when they signed a contract with Wärtsilä to supply the electrical systems that will ensure that electricity contributes about 80 per cent of the energy needed for a crossing. Another contract has been signed with Echandia for the delivery of the battery systems, which are designed to meet a 10-year lifespan.
NatPower Marine and Peel Ports Group announce plans for first ‘green shipping corridor’ between UK and Ireland to dramatically cut emissions
NatPower Marine and Peel Ports Group announced plans to establish the first “green shipping corridors” between Ireland and the UK. The proposed project would see NatPower Marine develop the UK’s first commercial electric ship charging network to support electric propulsion and cold ironing, as part of a global network.
The network – which would require an estimated GBP 100m investment from NatPower Marine – would see this dedicated e-ship charging infrastructure delivered across all eight UK and Irish ports operated by Peel Ports Group. The master plan would also include electric car, van and HGV chargers installed for commercial electric vehicles passing through the ports.
Gotlandsbolaget Q1 2024 report
Gotlandsbolaget's operations are largely seasonal and the first quarter of 2024 means, as expected, a negative adjusted operating profit. The result is positively affected by stabilized fuel prices and an early Easter, but negatively by costs for the establishment of the new cruise venture with BIRKA GOTLAND. Revenues amounted to SEK 384.9 million (362.9), and costs amounted to SEK -419.6 million (-425.8).
First vessel in new fleet of next generation Parramatta River ferries enters service
The NSW Government has announced the first of seven new Parramatta Class ferries, which have been designed by Incat Crowther, is now in service in Sydney. These new ferries will service the busy Parramatta River commuter route, and are being constructed in Tasmania, Australia by Richardson Devine Marine.

WMS introduces solutions to modernize ocean-going ferry connectivity
WMS is expanding its cellular and Wi-Fi services to ocean-going ferries. The WMS offering includes an Wi-Fi portal, network design, installation, management, and monitoring. This solution will require little onboard infrastructure yet deliver a robust Wi-Fi and cellular service. These services, which WMS demonstrated at the Shippax Ferry Conference, showcased the company’s networks, its engineering expertise, services from more than 350 global roaming partners, the Wi-Fi solution, and customer support.
Sea Lines signs an agreement with DP World to operate at the new Constanta ro-ro terminal
Black Sea ferry operator Sea Lines has signed an agreement with DP World, the world’s third-largest port operator. This partnership will see Sea Lines launch operations from Romania's Constanta Port to Turkey's strategic Karasu Port. The Åland Island-based ferry company plans to run a daily passenger and freight service along this route, establishing a crucial trade corridor that links Turkey with Central Europe.
This year, Sea Lines is making a multi-million-euro investment in the Constanta-Karasu route with two ferries, which will accommodate both passengers and freight. The first of these vessels, the former URD of Stena, is set to embark on its maiden journey in July 2024, marking a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity and trade between Romania and Turkey.
Astilleros Armon shipyard delivered the first of 12 new hybrid fast ferries for Liberty Lines
The first of 12 new hybrid monohull fast ferries for Italian operator Liberty Lines has been delivered by shipbuilder Astilleros Armon in Spain. The 39.5-metre VITTORIO MORACE is capable of transporting 251 passengers at speeds of 30 knots and can also operate in a fully electric mode at speeds of up to 10 knots.
The vessels will be delivered between 2024 and 2029. Next up being CRISTINA M.
Silversea takes delivery of SILVER RAY
Silversea has taken delivery of SILVER RAY from Meyer Werft, the second ship in its Nova Class. SILVER RAY joins her sister ship, SILVER NOVA, as one of the most energy efficient ultra-luxury and expedition cruise ships ever built.
Silversea’s Nova Class marks a new take on luxury at sea, introducing an unparalleled openness to the world with an asymmetrical design and 4,000m2 of exterior glass. Due to embark on her maiden voyage from Lisbon on 15 June, SILVER RAY will spend her inaugural season in the Mediterranean before crossing the Atlantic to the Americas in December 2024.
KONGSBERG and Torghatten to develop self-driving ferry service linking Trondheim and the Fosen peninsula
The strategic collaboration will see Kongsberg Maritime (KONGSBERG) technologies installed on the 2018-built sister ferries LAGATUN and MUNKEN, including auto docking, auto crossing, collision avoidance and situational awareness capabilities.
The car ferry service operation is part of the Norwegian highway network – County Road 715 - and connects the city of Trondheim with communities on the Fosen peninsula.

One of the world’s largest biofuel plants is planned in Malmö
Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) and Green2x have entered into a partnership with the focus on the design, establishment, and operation of one of the world’s largest biofuel plants to date at CMP’s terminals in the port of Malmö. The establishment contributes greatly to the green energy transition and at the same time creates opportunities for more jobs in Malmö.
In Copenhagen, the construction work on the largest shore power facilities for cruise in Europe has commenced. This is the second shore power facility for passenger vessels in Copenhagen after the inauguration in 2021 of the facility supplying power to the ferry connecting Oslo operated by DFDS.
The States of Guernsey and Government of Jersey beings formal tender process for passenger and freight ferry services
The States of Guernsey and Government of Jersey’s joint procurement process for passenger and freight ferry services is beginning its next phase, and the two Islands are now inviting formal tenders from applicants with the necessary experience and capability.
The joint tender exercise is available since Tuesday 14 May and can be located on Channel Islands Tenders (channelislandtenders.com).
The deadline for submissions is set to the 8 July 2024.
DFDS to Invest EUR 1 billion in battery electric ships for the Channel
In the future, maritime traffic in the Channel will be electric. DFDS is announcing an expected EUR 1 billion investment in six battery electric ships that will be deployed on the Dunkirk-Dover and Calais-Dover routes to carry passengers and freight between the UK and the European Union.
The first two electric vessels will be in operation by 2030, while the rest is expected to follow before 2035.
Scandlines 2023 performance
Scandlines maintained 2023 revenue and earnings in line with 2022 levels. The ferry operator realised a record peak season for leisure, as an increased number of passengers used Scandlines’ services. Whilst freight volumes were down from the record levels of 2022, Scandlines maintained its market share. The group continued to step up investment in future-proof ferries and infrastructure to increase capacity and improve the customer experience.
Scandlines maintained the positive momentum in 2023 with passengers continuing to return to the two ferry routes after years of negative impact from COVID-19 and related travel restrictions. The positive development drove moderate revenue growth of 1 percent to EUR 466 million and a solid result before tax of EUR 122 million.
Irish Ferries signs bareboat charter agreement with DP World France SAS for the SPIRIT OF BRITAIN
Irish Ferries has entered into a bareboat charter agreement with a purchase obligation for the SPIRIT OF BRITAIN (to be renamed). The vessel is available for immediate delivery and is expected to enter service with Irish Ferries during June.
The ship has been acquired for a total consideration of EUR 89.4 million settled through a combination of a two-year bareboat charter set at EUR 20,000 per day and a purchase obligation for EUR 74.8 million at the end of the charter.
The acquisition of the vessel will allow Irish Ferries to move one of the three existing ships on Dover – Calais to replace a chartered vessel currently operating on the Rosslare – Pembroke route.
The agreement means customers booked with either carrier will be offered the next available departure when they arrive at the port, whichever company is operating it – helping them reach their destination faster.
ALA SUINU is the first ro-pax vessel to receive the DNV Silent(E) notation
Wärtsilä has designed and delivered controllable pitch propellers for Stena’s new ro-pax vessel, ALA SUINU. ALA SUINU became the first ro-pax vessel to fulfil the DNV Silent(E) notation, satisfying the criteria in the operating conditions at 11 and 18 knots. This environment class notation from DNV was introduced to protect sensitive marine ecosystems, applying to vessels that demonstrate the ability to effectively reduce emissions of underwater radiated noise.
Stena Line to convert STENA SUPERFAST VII and VIII to methanol propulsion
Building upon the success of the STENA GERMANICA in 2015, Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Stena Line will work together on a project to retrofit STENA SUPERFAST VII and VIII with methanol propulsion. The ferries operate on the Scotland to Northern Ireland route between Cairnryan and Belfast.
As part of the project, the retrofit process will convert two out of the four main engines in each vessel to run on methanol alongside MGO (Marine Gas Oil). The ship’s bunkering, storage, fuel supply and supporting systems will also be adapted for methanol.
Tallink Grupp’s vessel SUPERFAST IX (ATLANTIC VISION) return home after 15 years
On 14 May, Tallink Grupp’s vessel SUPERFAST IX (currently named ATLANTIC VISION) was redelivered to the company at the Port of Odense in Denmark. The vessel has been chartered to Marine Atlantic in Canada and operating between Newfoundland and Sydney, Nova Scotia for the last 15 years.
SUPERFAST IX departed from Denmark to Tallinn on 14 May. In Tallinn, the vessel will initially be berthed at Paljassaare port until decisions are made regarding the vessel’s next operations.
Stena Line reinforces the Irish Sea management to drive growth in the region
Swedish ferry operator Stena Line announces strategic changes to its management team aimed at further enhancing its position as a market leader and driving continued growth in the region. Paul Grant will assume responsibility for the newly established Irish Sea North region, while Johan Edelman will take up the role of Trade Director for the Irish Sea South region.
Viking Line to double capacity on its Tallinn route this summer – CINDERELLA and GABRIELLA will serve the route alongside VIKING XPRS
Well over half a million Finns are expected to travel by boat to Estonia as a holiday destination this summer. Viking Line is meeting this demand by doubling capacity on the Estonia route for an extended period with the help of additional departures by VIKING CINDERELLA and GABRIELLA.

Maritime software provider NAPA has formally launched NAPA Stability for Ferries, with installations confirmed on seven Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV) vessels and ongoing sea trials with Tallink Silja Line. The new onboard stability solution is designed to meet the unique operational needs of the ferry segment, from maintaining safe loading conditions on tight schedules and constant cargo changes to the need for data transparency and ship-to-shore communication. Together, these features will help improve fleet safety and efficiency.
