Attica Group signs agreement with Stena RoRo for the long-term charter with purchase option of two (+two options) new methanol ready E-Flexers

Attica Group signed an agreement with Stena RoRo for the charter with purchase option of two E-Flexer vessels, to be built by Stena RoRo at the CMI Jinling Weihai Shipyard, China. The two new vessels with an overall length of 240m, are the largest ro-pax vessels ever ordered by a Greek shipping company. With passenger capacity of 1,500 pax and 3,320 lane metres cargo decks (approximately 200 freight units) per vessel, they will enhance significantly the overall transport capacity in the Adriatic routes.

BALTIC QUEEN sees energy efficiency improved by 13% as a result of technical upgrades

Tallink Grupp has recently analysed the initial results of the most recent technical upgrade to its Tallinn-Stockholm route vessel BALTIC QUEEN and found that the upgrade has led to a significant 13% increase in energy efficiency (i.e., the amount of fuel needed to travel 1 nautical mile has reduced by 13%) and reduction in emissions in the same amount in the last nine months.

Bridgemans renews CABO STAR contract with Trinidad and Tobago

Bridgemans Services Group (Bridgemans) announced that the company and Trinidad and Tobago's Ministry of Works and Transport (MOWT) have renewed their agreement for cargo ferry CABO STAR to continue to connect Port of Spain and Scarborough until January 2026.

Höegh Autoliners ASA signs another five-year contract with a major international car producer

Höegh Autoliners has signed a five-year contract with a major international car producer for transport of cars from US and Mexico to the Middle East.

A ban on emissions from ship scrubbers in Swedish waters is proposed in a memorandum

Emissions from scrubbers that wash flue gases on ships may be banned in Swedish maritime territory. A memorandum with such a proposal is now being forwarded.

Viking Line’s Helsinki-Stockholm link celebrate 50 years and 45 million passengers

Viking Line's service between Helsinki and Stockholm began in the middle of the 1970's oil crisis but nevertheless got off to a flying start. The route, which has already served 45 million passengers, was a key player in creating the tourism and later the experience industry in Finland.

Fincantieri signs agreement with Crystal for two new high-end cruise ships

Fincantieri and Crystal announced the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for the construction of two state-of-the-art high-end cruise ships, plus an option for a third unit. The value of this agreement, subject to financing and other terms and conditions, is between EUR 1-2 billion. The new units will boast a gross tonnage of 61,800 and accommodate approximately 690 passengers.

Launching of GNV’s second of four new ro-paxes at GSI

GNV celebrated the launching of GNV ORION, the second of four ro-pax vessels currently under construction in China at the Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) shipyard.

GNV ORION will be delivered to the owner in the summer of 2025 and will have a gross tonnage of approximately 52,000, a length of 218 metres, a width of 29.60 metres and will be able to reach a maximum speed of 25 knots. She will have 433 cabins and a carrying capacity of 1,785 passengers and 3,100 lane metres. The first ship, GNV POLARIS, will be delivered at the end of this year. The last two ships will be delivered in 2026 and will become LNG-powered.

Construction underway of Scilly’s new passenger and freight vessel

Building work is now officially underway on the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group's (ISSG) new passenger and freight vessels, with the first steel for the new ships being cut during a special ceremony at Piriou's shipyard in Vietnam.

The event marks the start of the build and was attended by senior company executives from ISSG and Piriou. Work will progress rapidly over the coming months, with the keel-laying for both vessels due to take place in the autumn.

Adria Ferries starts new Ancona to Bar line

Adria Ferries announced that starting from 9 July 2024 it will operate on the new line between Ancona, Italy and Bar, Montenegro. The ferry connection will be guaranteed with departures from both ports on a bi-weekly basis.

The AF MIA, a ro-pax ferry that entered the Adria Ferries fleet in December 2023, is the ferry that will operate on the Ancona - Bar route. The ship, formerly the CRUISE SMERALDA of Grimaldi Lines, can accommodate more than 1,500 passengers and has approximately 200 cabins.

Carnival Corporation Q2 2024 financial results

Revenues in Q2 2024 for Carnival Corporation reached USD 5.78 billion, up from USD 4.91 billion in the period last year. Record second quarter adjusted EBITDA of USD 1.2 billion, increasing over 75 percent compared to 2023. Net income was USD 92 million, an increase of nearly USD 500 million compared to 2023.

SPIRIT OF TASMANIA IV conducted its first sea trial

SPIRIT OF TASMANIA IV returned to the RMC shipyard from its first sea trial on Monday, 24th of June. During the sea trial, the ship's systems and performance were tested. The sea trial was successful, and work on the ship continues. A second sea trial will be conducted before the ship is handed over to TT-Line Spirit of Tasmania.

Upon its expected completion in August, SPIRIT OF TASMANIA IV will operate between mainland Australia and Tasmania on the Bass Strait, known for its challenging sea conditions.

Sister, SPIRIT OF TASMANIA V, will be delivered at the end of the year.

Saronic Ferries picks Nowhere Networks as supplier of high-speed internet

Greek Saronic Ferries has chosen Swedish Nowhere Networks as supplier of high-speed internet for its fleet consisting of five ships operating in the Saronic region of Greece. Saronic Ferries transports approximately one million passengers annually in the Saronic region with daily traffic from Piraeus to the islands of Aegina, Agistri, Poros and Methana peninsula.

Blue World completes successful testing of 200 kW maritime fuel cell system to run on green methanol

After months of preparation, Blue World Technologies announced the successful testing of the world's first 200 kW high-temperature PEM fuel cell module. The test was completed at the newly established test facilities in connection to the Blue Aalborg Factory, where the fuel cells for the system are produced. The initial testing has been completed with great results which has exceeded performance expectations.

Finnlines upgrades route between Sweden and Germany following passenger growth

Finnlines maintains its commitment to Malmö. In April, the shipping company launched a new line between Malmö and Poland and is now upgrading its services on the Malmö–Travemünde route. At the end of June, a new restaurant will be opened on board FINNSWAN operating the route, as well as renovated facilities on the other two, FINNPARTNER and FINNTRADER.

Gotlandsbolaget to continue to run the Gotland ferry services

Gotlandsbolaget and its subsidiaries have been informed of renewed confidence in the procured Gotland ferry services during the next traffic period 2027–2035. The procurement has been ongoing since August 2023 and was carried out in full competition from shipping companies throughout the EU.

The Gotland traffic will be operated with three ships, Swedish flag and Swedish collective agreement.

CLdN establishes Baltic connection with Transfennica

CLdN and Transfennica announced a connection of their shipping services in Zeebrugge to provide customers with broader connections through Northern and Western Europe. Transfennica's Northern Baltic service between Antwerp and the ports of Hanko, Kotka, Rauma (Finland) and Paldiski (Estonia) will call at CLdN's Albert II terminal in Zeebrugge every other Thursday enabling the exchange of northbound and southbound cargo. The first call is scheduled for Thursday 25 July.

Emanuele Grimaldi re-elected as Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) Board of Directors has unanimously re-elected Emanuele Grimaldi, President and Managing Director of Grimaldi Euromed SpA, as Chairman of the Board. ICS represents 80% of the world's merchant fleet and is the principal international trade association for merchant shipowners and operators. Mr Grimaldi will continue as Chairman for another term of two years.

Three years extension for Guldar Kivro as a member of the Management Board of OÜ TS Laevad

The supervisory board of AS Tallinna Sadam's subsidiary OÜ TS Laevad extended powers of Guldar Kivro as a member of the Management Board for three years from 9 December 2024.

Guldar joined TS Laevad in June 2016 as a captain-project manager of the construction of new ferries and has also served as the captain of the TIIU. Guldar became member of the Management Board of TS Laevad in December 2018, and he is responsible for shipping business.

Fincantieri and Viking have announced that they have signed contracts for the construction of two further cruise vessels, based on the features of the previous ships, which Fincantieri has already built for this shipowner. The vessels will be delivered in 2028 and 2029. The new vessels will be placed in the small cruise ship segment, the gross tonnage is about 54,300 and they will accommodate 998 passengers on board in 499 cabins.

Estonian State Fleet will launch a new ferry construction tender for the Virtsu-Kuivastu route in September 2024

After an initial procurement process and technical consultations earlier this year, the Estonian State Fleet, in collaboration with the Ministry of Climate, has decided to make adjustments to the Virtsu-Kuivastu ferry project to keep construction costs within the original budget of EUR 40 million, funded by the EU modernization fund and the state budget. The new ferry will be slightly smaller, more cost-effective, and is expected to be completed by the fall of 2026.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding receives orders for Japan's first methanol-capable ro-ro ships

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has received orders from Toyofuji Shipping and Fukuju Shipping for Japan's first methanol-capable ro-ro ships. The two ships will be built at the Enoura Plant of MHI's Shimonoseki Shipyard & Machinery Works in Yamaguchi Prefecture, with scheduled completion and delivery by the end of fiscal 2027.

The ships will be approximately 169.9 metres in overall length and 30.2 metres in breadth, with 15,750 gross tonnage, and loading capacity for around 2,300 passenger vehicles.

Höegh Autoliners secures significant Enova funding for four ammonia-powered Aurora vessels and sees first out on sea trials

Höegh Autoliners was granted NOK 109,4 million in increased Enova funding as part of its “Ammonia fuelled vessel programme” to ensure that four of Höegh Autoliners’ Aurora Class PCTC vessels can run fully on ammonia when they are delivered in 2027. The company will in total receive NOK 255,4 million in Enova funding.
Höegh Autoliners also announced that the first ship in the 12-ship programme, HÖEGH AURORA, has been out on sea trials and should be delivered in the next few weeks.

New Wasaline timetable with a record number of weekly departures

As of 24 June, Wasaline will operate a total of 26 trips per week, setting a new record for the company. The two new trips between Vaasa and Umeå will run on Mondays, with AURORA BOTNIA making four departures−two from Umeå and two from Vaasa. AURORA BOTNIA now runs 3-4 trips daily throughout the high season, which lasts until 5 August 2024.

Wasaline also proudly announced that the latest Port State Control (PSC) inspections of AURORA BOTNIA resulted in a clean sheet with no remarks.

The European Commission approves EUR 570 million Italian State aid scheme for port shore power solutions

The European Commission has approved, under EU State aid rules, a EUR 570 million Italian scheme to incentivise ships to use shore-side electricity when they are at berth in maritime ports. The measure contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution and noise in line with the objectives of the European Green Deal.

CMA CGM to charter MIDAS until December 2026

CMA CGM has time chartered Godby Shipping’s MIDAS until December 2026. MIDAS will, before starting the charter, go through class renewal docking in Turkey. After the dry dock, MIDAS will replace MIMER in the Caribbean, and MIMER will go for her class renewal docking and is then open for new adventures. Godby estimate that the dry docking of the vessels will prolong their lifetime by about 10 years.

BALTIC PRINCESS continues on the route between Stockholm and Turku - now with a new cruise product

Tallink Silja Line announced that BALTIC PRINCESS will continue on the Stockholm-Turku route, instead of returning to the former Kapellskär-Turku route. In addition, a new cruise product, "A Day in Turku", is being introduced from Stockholm. This cruise departs every Tuesday starting 17 September 2024.

Notice of intention to make a voluntary takeover offer to acquire the shares of AS Tallink Grupp

Infortar, the largest investment holding company in Estonia, has submitted an application to the Estonian Financial Supervision and Resolution Authority (EFSA) for approval of a public and voluntary takeover offer for Tallink shareholders. According to plans, Tallink will remain a publicly listed company.

Royal Caribbean International takes delivery of UTOPIA OF THE SEAS and celebrate keel-laying of CELEBRITY XCEL

Royal Caribbean International’s latest Oasis Class cruise ship, UTOPIA OF THE SEAS, has been delivered from the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard. The keel-laying ceremony for CELEBRITY XCEL has also been held, the fifth ship in Celebrity Cruises’ Edge series.

Grant received for study to retrofit SAMSKIP KVITNOS with fuel cells and hydrogen fuel

TECO 2030, BLOM Maritime and Samskip received ENOVA grant to study a retrofit of Samskip’s 2015-built LNG vessel SAMSKIP KVITNOS with fuel cells and hydrogen fuel, which currently operates on a weekly multipurpose service from Rotterdam and along most of the Norwegian coastline to Hammerfest.

The goal of the project is to prepare for an investment decision to retrofit SAMSKIP KVITNOS. The project also aims to facilitate long-term hydrogen fuel supply contracts due to the vessel’s fixed route.

Sweden-Belgium Green Shipping Corridor welcomes new partner and expands green ambitions

Port of Gothenburg, North Sea Port, and DFDS welcome Port of Antwerp-Bruges to the Green Shipping Corridor and bolsters the green ambitions of the project. By 2030, two DFDS ammonia-fuelled ro-ro vessels are expected to operate on the routes between Sweden and Belgium, and the ports will step up efforts on electrification and ammonia bunkering, potentially making it the world's first green ammonia shipping corridor for freight vessels.

Transaction of historic route: A stand-alone project for both parties

Gotlandsbolaget's latest step in expanding into the cruiseferry segment will not involve the Åland joint-venture partner in Gotland Alandia Cruises. At the same time, DFDS emphasizes that it still has long-term plans to develop the only remaining route in the network currently based on cruiseferry tonnage, following the news of a Danish-Swedish transaction of the historic Copenhagen-Oslo route.

DFDS to sell Oslo-Frederikshavn-Copenhagen route to Gotlandsbolaget

DFDS will sell mini-cruise route between Norway and Denmark to Swedish shipping company Gotlandsbolaget. The decision will ensure that the route receives the future focus and investments needed to further develop, while DFDS strengthens the focus on its core business within freight, passenger transport and logistics. The sale price is around DKK 400m.

DFDS May volumes: both freight and passenger continued to grow

Total freight volumes in May 2024 were 6.9% above 2023 and up 3.8% adjusted for the addition of Strait of Gibraltar routes in 2024 and closure of the Calais-Tilbury route in 2023. The number of passengers in May 2024 was 49.2% above 2023 and up 17.0% adjusted for addition of the Strait of Gibraltar routes.

World’s largest car carrier receives LR Approval in Principle

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) to the Marine Design & Research Institute of China (MARIC) for a dual-fuel 12,800 CEU capacity PCTC design - the world’s largest car carrier. The vessel is equipped with an advanced ammonia-fuel power system. Solar energy and batteries can also be integrated.

TUI Cruises takes delivery of methanol ready MEIN SCHIFF 7

Meyer Turku delivered MEIN SCHIFF 7 to TUI Cruises, the first vessel with methanol readiness built at the shipyard. Mein Schiff 7 is the seventh ship of the Mein Schiff series built at the Turku shipyard.

MEIN SCHIFF 7 is the first ship in the MEIN SCHIFF fleet to run exclusively on low-emission marine diesel (with maximum sulphur content of 0.1%). The ship has a shore power connection and is equipped with catalytic converters. In addition, MEIN SCHIFF 7 is built so that it can also run on methanol, which with the green methanol of the future will make the ship's propulsion power almost CO2-neutral. MEIN SCHIFF 7 is the first vessel with methanol capability built at the Meyer Turku shipyard.

Baleària adds the DENIA CIUTAT CREATIVA to the route between Motril and Tangier Med

Baleària has incorporated the DENIA CIUTAT CREATIVA ferry into the daily maritime line that connects the Port of Motril with the Moroccan port of Tangier Med. Last year, Baleària carried more than 20,000 passengers and 246,000 lane metres of cargo on the route.

Hvide Sande Shipyard to build a 4 MWh electric ferry for Torghatten

The Danish Hvide Sande Shipyard will build a new 50-metre all-electric ferry for Torghatten, the largest to date for the yard. The 4 MWh-battery ferry will have a capacity of 30 cars and up to 149 passengers and will operate in the Tromsø area north of the Arctic Circle. The project is already well underway, and the hull (158) is expected to be delivered to Hvide Sande in the summer of 2025 so that outfitting can begin.

MIDAS contract with DFDS extended

Godby Shipping's MIDAS contract with DFDS has been extended. DFDS have used their option and extended the contract for MIDAS so that it is now valid until 31 September 2024.

WSF finally goes out to tender for five new plug-in hybrid ferries

Washington State Ferries (WSF) has finally gone out to tender for the construction of five plug-in hybrid-electric passenger/vehicle ferries. Deliveries are expected to start from 2028.

The five new ferries will serve WSF two routes Seattle-Bremerton and Clinton-Mukilteo and will each be able to carry 1,500 passengers and 160 cars. They will be slightly longer than the current diesel-electric powered Olympic-class, which were built between 2014 and 2018.

Red Funnel to invest GBP 100 million in three new cross-Solent ferries

Red Funnel is embarking on a three-ship GBP 100 million fleet renewal programme for its service between Southampton and East Cowes, on the Isle of Wight. The three new passenger/vehicle ferries will replace the company’s three ageing Raptor-class vessels, two of which are now 30-years old. At the moment the three new ferries will be hybrid vessels, powered by conventional diesels. Red Funnel is not yet ready to take the battery-powered vessel route.

RED JET 4 sold to South Korea

Meanwhile, after 21-years service for Red Funnel on its high-speed passenger service from Southampton to West Cowes the fast ferry RED JET 4 has left the waters of the Solent for a new life in South Korea for Nam Hae Express Co

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding holds christening and launch ceremony for the TRANS HARMONY GREEN

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., held a christening and launch ceremony for the TRANS HARMONY GREEN, the first of two LNG-powered 3,000-CEU capacity PCTCs under construction for Toyofuji Shipping Co., Ltd. TRANS HARMONY GREEN will serve on routes in Asia after its scheduled handover in late January 2025.

Fixing the 15%: the case for fuel cells

As we look ahead, with further regulation and changes on the horizon, shipowners and cargo owners could be excused for being perplexed by a series of simultaneous challenges – however, fuel cells can help many owners rise to these challenges, says Johan Burgren, Business Manager Marine at PowerCell Group.

JIAN ZHEN HAO enters service between China and Japan

IAN ZHEN HAO, China-Japan International Ferry (CHINJIF) 's new ship left Shanghai for Osaka on 8 June 2024 and entered service on the Shanghai (China)-Osaka (Japan) route.

JIAN ZHEN HAO was built by CMI Jinling Weihai and designed by SDARI. The vessel can accommodate 192 passengers and 334 TEU. The ro-pax has a length of 167.2m, 25.0m beam and a 21-knot service speed.

Sweden's first OPS for cruise ships soon a reality in Ports of Stockholm

Sweden's first and one of Europe's first onshore power supply for cruise ships has passed an important milestone through test calls with ships in central Stockholm. Over 35 cruise ships are expected to connect by October this year.

Ferry REGULA additional trips in summer 2024

The subsidiary of AS Tallinna Sadam, OÜ TS Laevad, signed an additional agreement with the Ministry of Regional Affairs and Agricultural. Based on the public passenger transport service, the Ministry will order additionally up to 375 trips with the ferry REGULA on the Virtsu-Kuivastu line from 20 June to 4 August 2024.

Second Islay ferry successfully launched

LOCH INDAAL was launched on Saturday 8 June at Cemre Marin Endustri shipyard in Yalova, Turkey.

The vessel is the second of four ferries being built at the yard and will serve Islay and Jura alongside sister vessel, ISLE OF ISLAY, which was launched in March.

Scheduled for delivery in February 2025, LOCH INDAAL will significantly boost capacity on the Islay routes, with the ability to accommodate up to 450 passengers and 100 cars, or 14 commercial vehicles. This addition will increase vehicle and freight capacity by 40% on the Islay routes, strengthening the overall fleet's resilience.

Irish Ferries name changes for Dover Calais and Holyhead Dublin ships

Irish Ferries announced that the ship currently called OSCAR WILDE serving the Holyhead to Dublin and Dublin to Cherbourg routes, is to be renamed the JAMES JOYCE, and the recently acquired SPIRIT OF BRITAIN will be renamed as OSCAR WILDE. OSCAR WILDE will join the Irish Ferries fleet on the Dover to Calais route later this month replacing the ISLE OF INNISFREE, which will move to the Pembroke to Rosslare route.

Boreal Sjø and Torghatten Nord awarded contracts for ferry operations

In March, the ferry connections in Finnmark were put out to tender so that new contracts are in place from 1 January 2026. The offers received have now been evaluated, and contracts have been awarded to Boreal Sjø and Torghatten Nord.

The ferry connections Korsfjord–Nyvoll and Klokkarøya–Kjerringholmen will be operated by electric ferries from 1 January 2026.

How much does it cost to travel by ferry in Europe?

Vivanoda, a web platform that enables all travellers to find ferry, bus, train and plane tickets, launched a major study and analysed tens of thousands of ferry fares on hundreds of routes in Europe, as well as crossings to Turkey and the Maghreb countries (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia), in order to get as exhaustive a picture as possible of ferry ticket prices according to a number of criteria.

More than 20,000 LH2 fuel crossings performed by HYDRA

HYDRA has been operating utilizing liquid hydrogen (LH2) as fuel since March 2023. Norled reports that the regularity has been perfect, the technology is proven, and HYDRA has now conducted 20,000 fjord crossings with LH2 as fuel.

At Viganeset lumber quay in Hjelmeland (the LH2 bunkering capital of the world), Norled is now achieving a bunkering rate of more than 70 kg/min.

Wasaline introduces voluntary climate compensation also for passengers

Now passengers on the Vaasa-Umeå route can also compensate for their journey by paying a nominal voluntary fee. The goal for Wasaline is to reduce the climate footprint by at least 5% each year, and to operate climate-neutrally in Kvarken by 2030.

Telenor Maritime and Red Bull MOBILE launch exclusive partnership

Telenor Maritime and Red Bull Mobile have signed a roaming agreement that allows Red Bull MOBILE to offer affordable data plans to passengers roaming into the Telenor Maritime mobile network on board ships.

By downloading the Red Bull MOBILE eSIM app and purchasing the Maritime package, passengers can surf at predictable and affordable costs while they are sailing. The app-based eSIM enables passengers from any location to browse the internet worldwide, without the worry of bill shocks.

Decatrip Project Completed – RMC, Viking Line, Åbo Akademi, and Kempower Collaborate to Create a Green Maritime Corridor Between Turku and Stockholm

The innovative project Decatrip, which began in 2022, has been completed. The project enables the development of one of the world’s first carbon-neutral sea routes. RMC explored how existing ships could be modified to become more environmentally friendly. The company is now equipped to modernise ships, enhancing their environmental friendliness.
