Finnlines to launch a new freight service from Finland to Sheerness, UK
Finnlines is set to launch a new freight service from Finland to London Medway located in Sheerness, with further connections available to Belgium, Spain, and Ireland. The first arrival will take place on 23 September 2024. The new service is part of Finnlines’ strategy to improve service sustainability and route network, and it will be operated with three Finneco-class vessels calling London Medway once a week.
Oma Baatbyggeri to build two new aluminium electric ferries for Torghatten
Torghatten and Oma Baatbyggeri signed a contract for the construction of two new electrically operated ferries for Finnmark, built in aluminium. The ferries will be 49 metres long, have a beam of 13 metres and will carry 95 passengers and 28 cars. Delivery will be in Q4 2025.
RMC delivered SPIRIT OF TASMANIA IV to TT-Line Tasmania
The Tasmanian Spirit of Tasmania (TT-Line Company PTY Ltd.) ordered two ro-pax ferries from Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) for the challenging open sea route to Australia. The first vessel, SPIRIT OF TASMANIA IV, has now been completed and delivered. The second, SPIRIT OF TASMANIA V, was launched in July.
DFDS August volumes
Total freight volumes in August 2024 were 7.4% above 2023 and up 4.4% adjusted for the addition of Strait of Gibraltar routes in 2024 and closure of the Calais-Tilbury route in 2023. The number of passengers in August 2024 was 68.7% above 2023 and up 9.1% adjusted for the addition of the Strait of Gibraltar routes.
Condor Ferries sees strong increase in 2024 summer sailings
Condor Ferries reported a +14% Y-O-Y increase in overall network carryings during this year’s peak travel period (14 July – 3 September 2024), representing an increase in carryings of 26,874 compared to 2023. Of particular significance is the increase in passengers carried to and from the island of Jersey: during the peak 2024 period, Condor Ferries carried 19,217 additional car and foot passengers on UK and French services to and from Jersey compared to the same period in 2023, amounting to an increase of +16%.
Brittany Ferries reports a year of growth
In its 2024 financial year (November 2023 - October 2024), Brittany Ferries increases its passenger volume by 6.5%, with 1.93 million passengers booked compared to the same period in 2023. This growth recorded for the second consecutive year (+11.9% in 2023 compared to 2022) confirms its return to growth.
Slightly more passengers for Destination Gotland during the summer of 2024
Travel with Destination Gotland during the summer months of 2024 increased slightly compared to the previous year. During the period June-August, nearly 940,000 people travelled with the ferries, which corresponds to an increase of approximately 2,000 travellers.
June saw a 10 percent increase in travellers compared to the same month in 2023. July remained the most popular month for travellers, despite a four percent drop, and August was at the same level as the year before.
Höegh Autoliners receives second Aurora Class newbuild
Höegh Autoliners’ second Aurora Class vessel, the HÖEGH BOREALIS, was delivered at a grand naming ceremony in China. When HÖEGH BOREALIS leaves the China Merchants Heavy Industry’s yard in Jiangsu, China, on her maiden voyage, she will be cutting carbon emissions per car transported by up to 58 percent from the current industry average.
From 2027, the first Aurora class vessel will be powered by green ammonia, eliminating nearly all carbon emissions.
Stena Line announces change to Rosslare-Cherbourg service
Following a strategic route review, Stena Line has announced that from 27 October 2024, it will be withdrawing STENA VISION from its Rosslare-Cherbourg route.
A three-day week service for freight and travel customers between Rosslare-Cherbourg will be provided by STENA HORIZON offering a choice of up to six crossings per week.
Fewer departures meant more passengers for Molslinjen
Molslinjen experienced a better August than last year, despite one less ferry and fewer departures.
After a somewhat disappointing July, August chose to stamp in with beautiful late summer weather - and that really sent the Danes out on the water and on the Molslinjen's ferry routes. With the exception of a single route, all routes saw more August visitors in 2024 than the previous year.
"So even though we sail 129 fewer departures, in August this year we have had room for 331,473 passengers on the remaining three ferries - an increase of almost four percent compared to August 2023", says Molslinjen's commercial director, Jesper Skovgaard.
Culinary Olympics’ gold-medallist creates fine-dining tasting menu for Tallink Silja Line vessels
The new fine dining tasting menu “Menu Nordic,” available onboard Tallink Silja Line cruise vessels, has been exclusively created for the company’s fleet by the 2024 Culinary Olympics’ gold medallists - the Culinary Team of Finland. The five-course set menu is offered onboard company’s vessels SILJA SERENADE and SILJA SYMPHONY, operating on the Helsinki-Stockholm route; onboard VICTORIA I, operating on the Helsinki-Tallinn route; and onboard the BALTIC QUEEN, operating on the company’s Tallinn-Stockholm route; available from 11 September 2024 to 14 January 2025.

On the eve of the 2024 Breton Economic Forum, several economic and financial news items confirm the sustainability of the recovery undertaken by Brittany Ferries after the Brexit and Covid crisis. September 2024 opens with several important announcements for the Breton shipping company.
Reimbursement of repayable advances granted by the Brittany and Normandy Regions during the Covid crisis and situation of the State-Guaranteed Loan (PGE).
In September 2024, eight new companies will also enter the company's capital. Solar power to supply energy for Alslinjen’s new electric ferry
Molslinjen is now investing in a new 132,000 MWh solar park on Djursland to power the new NERTHUS electric ferry currently being built at Cemre Shipyard for service by Alslinjen on the Bøjden to Fynshav route. The investment is an important step towards Molslinjen's vision of emission-free operation by 2040.
Cemre will also build a sister ship for Molslinjen, TYRFING, destined for Samsølinjen with a slightly larger battery capacity at 3.8 MWh for the longer Ballen - Kalundborg route.
AIDA Cruises tests further biofuels
In the port of Rotterdam on 5 September 2024 AIDA Cruises refuelled its AIDAPRIMA cruise ship for the first time using 100% renewable Bio Marine Fuel as part of a pilot project to evaluate the fuel performance in regular ship operations for potential for future use. The blended biofuel is produced entirely from advanced feedstocks organic waste or residue. The Bio Marine Fuel (BMF100) sustainable biofuel supplied by VARO Energy is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions minimum of 85% compared to conventional fossil fuels.

First in the four-ship series, GNV POLARIS, left the Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) shipyard to carry out sea trials. The soon to be delivered ship, will serve the Valencia – Palma route.
GNV POLARIS is 218-metres long and has a capacity for 1,500 passengers in 303 cabins and 3,100 lanemetres of freight.
Brunvoll propulsion and autonomy for new Torghatten ferry
Brunvoll announced a partnership with Torghatten Nord for its new hybrid ferry in construction at Western Baltija Shipbuilding. Brunvoll will supply essential systems for the ferry, including two pulling azimuth thrusters, an Auto-Crossing system, a remote Condition Monitoring System, and a bridge-to-blade control system (BruCon PTC), ensuring efficient and reliable operation.
The 73.3-metre-long vessel, with a breadth of 14.3 meters, will accommodate 50 cars and 199 passengers. Equipped with a 3,600-kWh battery capacity, the ferry will operate on electric power between Svolvær and Skrova, and in hybrid mode during the summer to Skutvik, significantly reducing NOx and CO2 emissions.
Traffic on the Estonia route continues to grow – Viking Line had a total of nearly 1.8 million passengers during the summer
Nearly 1.8 million passengers travelled on Viking Line’s vessels during the period June–August 2024. The greatest increase in demand was on the Tallinn route, which also had more departures than in previous summer seasons. This summer, passengers were drawn by the variety of attractions in Estonia and the other Baltic countries, to Åland as depicted in the historical film Stormskärs Maja, and by a refurbished VIKING CINDERELLA.
Höegh Autoliners selects Kongsberg Maritime for propulsion upgrades on 10 PCTC vessels
Kongsberg Maritime has won a contract to upgrade the propulsion systems on 10 DSME Class PCTCs for Höegh Autoliners. The upgrades are projected to achieve fuel savings of at least 6.5%, according to detailed hydrodynamic studies conducted at Kongsberg Maritime’s Hydrodynamic Research Centre, validated by full-scale measurements taken from two vessels already refitted with the Promas Lite system, confirming the anticipated efficiency gains.
Naming and launching ceremony held for SUNFLOWER PIRKA
The naming and launching ceremony was held for the second of two 199.4m long LNG-fuelled ferries being built at the Naikai Zosen shipyard. Named SUNFLOWER PIRKA, it will be delivered in April 2025 and is slated to enter service on the late-night Oarai-Tomakomai route operated by MOL Sunflower in mid-2025.
AS Tallink Grupp Statistics for August 2024
In August 2024, AS Tallink Grupp transported 562,451 passengers, which is a 2.4% decrease compared to August 2023. The number of cargo units decreased by 16.5% compared to the same period a year ago and was 21,953 units. The number of passenger vehicles decreased by 8.1% to 79,791 vehicles in the same comparison.
mtu large engines from Rolls-Royce now approved for HVO and IMO III
Rolls-Royce now offers its mtu Series 1163 and 8000 large engines in all cylinder variants - 16 and 20V in each case - in the power range between 4,800 and 10,000 KW with SCR system for compliance with emission stage IMO III. This enables ship operators to enter the Emission Control Areas (ECA), for example in the Baltic and North Sea and off the North American coast. In addition, Rolls-Royce has now approved these mtu engines for operation with sustainable fuels (EN15940, e.g. HVO).
Deltamarin secures design contracts for 14th and 15th E-Flexer vessels
Deltamarin has signed a contract with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai) for the design and engineering of the 14th and 15th vessels in Stena RoRo’s E-Flexer series. The signed contract covers the complete basic and detailed design of two new multi-fuel E-Flexer ro-pax vessels, both of which will be methanol-ready.
The new vessels will be chartered by Attica Group for operations on Adriatic routes, with an option for two additional E-Flexers. The vessels will be built by Stena RoRo at the CMI Jinling Shipyard (Weihai) in China and are scheduled for delivery in April and August 2027.
Scandlines report record summer
During June, July and August, Scandlines transported 2.7 million passengers and 728,000 cars between Germany and Denmark. This is more than last summer, which added up to 2.6 million passengers and 717,000 cars.
The weekend of 19-21 July saw the largest number of passengers (146,209), while the weekend of 26-28 July saw the largest number of cars, 40,235. In July 2024 alone, the number of passengers was 1.2 million (Puttgarden-Rødby and Rostock-Gedser).

Torghatten Nord has signed a contract with the Turkish Özata Shipyard for two electric ferries with a battery capacity of 1,960 kWh, built to a design of The Norwegian Ship Design Company.
The ferries will be 76.85 metres long and will have a capacity to carry 202 passengers and 60 vehicles.
Delivery of the two is set for June and September 2026.
Climate compensation proved popular for Wasaline
At the beginning of June, Wasaline introduced the option to offset the carbon footprint of their journeys, and the interest has been significant, especially among Swedish travellers. The proceeds from the climate compensation go entirely towards powering the ship with biogas. Since the initiative began, over 1,500 people have chosen to compensate for their travel emissions.
Lighting on Norway’s largest zero (direct)-emission ferry will notify hearing-impaired passengers when it’s time to dock
Passengers aboard Torghatten Nord’s upcoming electric ferry HINNØY, which will operate between Bognes to Lødingen, west of Narvik, Norway, will get an extra notification when it’s time to dock through innovative lighting in the ferry’s passenger lounge.
Glamox has provided lighting for the ferry, including special tuneable LED luminaires that will gradually brighten as the vessel approaches the harbour, alerting passengers to prepare to disembark. This will be particularly helpful for passengers who are hearing impaired. The energy-efficient, human-centric lighting can also mimic natural daylight and be controlled to create a relaxing ambiance.
Color Line to futureproof ro-pax vessels with Wärtsilä hybrid scrubber upgrade
Wärtsilä will upgrade the exhaust treatment system onboard four vessels in Color Line’s fleet. Wärtsilä will add close-looped functionality to the ships’ current open-loop scrubbers, enabling the ships to operate at maximum efficiency, safely and in the most environmentally sustainable way possible.
The upgrade will be carried out on four ro-pax vessels, which sail between Norway and Denmark, and Norway and Germany, and will commence at the latter end of 2024.

The Grimaldi Group strengthens its maritime connections between Italy and Turkey
Starting from 14 September, the Grimaldi Group will deploy ECO MEDITERRANEA and ECO MALTA on the new regular service between Trieste and Ambarli (Istanbul), with two weekly departures from each port.

AIDA Cruises opens modernized Fleet Operations Centre
AIDA Cruises officially opened its fully modernized Fleet Operations Centre (FOC) in Hamburg. The FOC is part of Carnival Maritime GmbH (CMG), which was established in 2015 as a maritime service unit for AIDA Cruises and Costa Cruises. The embedded FOC, which is available around the clock for cruise ships, plays a central role and serves as the first point of contact and support centre.
Trinidad and Tobago procures reservation system from Carus
The Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago has engaged Carus for their new reservations system for the ferry operation between the islands of Trinidad and Tobago.
Carus will provide the reservations and ticketing platform, along with a set of self-service applications for travelers in Trinidad and Tobago, including web booking and ticket vending kiosks.
Stena becomes sole owner of transport and logistics company NTEX
Stena, which previously owned 75 percent of the shares in the transport and logistics company NTEX, has purchased an additional 25 percent of the shares, becoming the sole owner of the company.
NTEX is one of Sweden's most expansive transport companies with 20 offices in 12 countries in Europe, over 1,000 employees and around SEK 4 billion in turnover. The company owns and leases around 1,500 trucks and has 16 terminals and warehouses of its own.
Production started of Torghatten Nord’s new hydrogen ferries
Cemre Shipyard started the production of the first of two new hydrogen ferries for Torghatten Nord. The ships will have their hulls and pre-outfitting constructed at Cemre Shipyard. After this, the ships will be sent from the Turkish shipyard to Norway and Myklebust where the outstanding construction will take place until final delivery of both in 2026.
The two hydrogen powered ferries, destined for the 3.5-hour long Bodø-Lofoten route, are designed by The Norwegian Ship Design Company (NSDC). The 120-metre double-enders will each have a capacity for 120 cars and 599 passengers.
Havila Kystruten AS second quarter 2024 financial results
Revenues in the second quarter of 2024 for Havila Kystruten AS amounted to NOK 369 million, an increase from NOK 172 million in the same period last year. For the first half of the year, revenues were NOK 662 million, up from NOK 289 million the previous year. Adjusted for growth in the number of vessels, this corresponds to a revenue increase of 7% for the second quarter and 15% for the first half-year. HAVILA POLLUX was temporarily out of service for two round trips in May due to technical issues. The revenue loss related to this is primarily covered through the company's loss of hire insurance.
Latest Sydney commuter ferry, JOHN NUTT, delivered from Richardson Devine Marine
The new vessel, JOHN NUTT, completed its maiden landing at the iconic Man O’War steps of the Sydney Opera House in late June following a successful three-day voyage from Tasmania where it was built by Richardson Devine Marine. Named in honour of Dr John Nutt, known for his lead role in the construction of the Sydney Opera House, the ferry’s arrival paid tribute to his significant contributions to Sydney’s maritime heritage.
Samskip joins TECO 2030’s Horizon Europe project “HyEkoTank”
TECO 2030 and the HyEkoTank consortium announced that Samskip has been formally approved by the EU as a partner in the HyEkoTank project. The consortium also announces that the vessel to be retrofitted with their zero (direct)-emission fuel cell and hydrogen technology will be SAMSKIP KVITNOS.
2015-built SAMSKIP KVITNOS operates on a fixed route on a weekly multipurpose service from Rotterdam, along the Norwegian west coast all the way north to Hammerfest.
The HyEkoTank project is the world’s largest ongoing fuel cell retrofit project, aiming to demonstrate zero-emission fuel cell and hydrogen technology contributing to decarbonization of the world's existing fleet of more than 100,000 ships.

The Grimaldi Group strengthens its maritime connections between Italy and Turkey
Starting from 14 September, the Grimaldi Group will deploy ECO MEDITERRANEA and ECO MALTA on the new regular service between Trieste and Ambarli (Istanbul), with two weekly departures from each port.
With the new direct Trieste-Ambarli connection, the Grimaldi Group is responding to the growing demand for high-quality maritime transport services between Italy and Turkey from its clients, notably some of the world’s leading manufacturers of automobiles and industrial vehicles, such as BMW, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, DAF, Scania, Stellantis, Kia, and Hyundai.
AIDA Cruises opens modernized Fleet Operations Centre
AIDA Cruises officially opened its fully modernized Fleet Operations Centre (FOC) in Hamburg. The FOC is part of Carnival Maritime GmbH (CMG), which was established in 2015 as a maritime service unit for AIDA Cruises and Costa Cruises. The embedded FOC, which is available around the clock for cruise ships, plays a central role and serves as the first point of contact and support centre.
Trinidad and Tobago procures reservation system from Carus
The Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago has engaged Carus for their new reservations system for the ferry operation between the islands of Trinidad and Tobago.
Carus will provide the reservations and ticketing platform, along with a set of self-service applications for travelers in Trinidad and Tobago, including web booking and ticket vending kiosks.
Stena becomes sole owner of transport and logistics company NTEX
Stena, which previously owned 75 percent of the shares in the transport and logistics company NTEX, has purchased an additional 25 percent of the shares, becoming the sole owner of the company.
NTEX is one of Sweden's most expansive transport companies with 20 offices in 12 countries in Europe, over 1,000 employees and around SEK 4 billion in turnover. The company owns and leases around 1,500 trucks and has 16 terminals and warehouses of its own.
Production started of Torghatten Nord’s new hydrogen ferries
Cemre Shipyard started the production of the first of two new hydrogen ferries for Torghatten Nord. The ships will have their hulls and pre-outfitting constructed at Cemre Shipyard. After this, the ships will be sent from the Turkish shipyard to Norway and Myklebust where the outstanding construction will take place until final delivery of both in 2026.
The two hydrogen powered ferries, destined for the 3.5-hour long Bodø-Lofoten route, are designed by The Norwegian Ship Design Company (NSDC). The 120-metre double-enders will each have a capacity for 120 cars and 599 passengers.
Havila Kystruten AS second quarter 2024 financial results
Revenues in the second quarter of 2024 for Havila Kystruten AS amounted to NOK 369 million, an increase from NOK 172 million in the same period last year. For the first half of the year, revenues were NOK 662 million, up from NOK 289 million the previous year. Adjusted for growth in the number of vessels, this corresponds to a revenue increase of 7% for the second quarter and 15% for the first half-year. HAVILA POLLUX was temporarily out of service for two round trips in May due to technical issues. The revenue loss related to this is primarily covered through the company's loss of hire insurance.
Latest Sydney commuter ferry, JOHN NUTT, delivered from Richardson Devine Marine
The new vessel, JOHN NUTT, completed its maiden landing at the iconic Man O’War steps of the Sydney Opera House in late June following a successful three-day voyage from Tasmania where it was built by Richardson Devine Marine. Named in honour of Dr John Nutt, known for his lead role in the construction of the Sydney Opera House, the ferry’s arrival paid tribute to his significant contributions to Sydney’s maritime heritage.
Samskip joins TECO 2030’s Horizon Europe project “HyEkoTank”
TECO 2030 and the HyEkoTank consortium announced that Samskip has been formally approved by the EU as a partner in the HyEkoTank project. The consortium also announces that the vessel to be retrofitted with their zero (direct)-emission fuel cell and hydrogen technology will be SAMSKIP KVITNOS.
2015-built SAMSKIP KVITNOS operates on a fixed route on a weekly multipurpose service from Rotterdam, along the Norwegian west coast all the way north to Hammerfest.
The HyEkoTank project is the world’s largest ongoing fuel cell retrofit project, aiming to demonstrate zero-emission fuel cell and hydrogen technology contributing to decarbonization of the world's existing fleet of more than 100,000 ships.
