Tallink Grupp extends charter agreement for SILJA EUROPA to Holland

Tallink Grupp has announced that the company's subsidiary Tallink Silja OY has signed a contract with Slaapschepen Public BV, an organisation nominated by Centraal Orgaan Opvang Asielzoekers (COA) in the Netherlands, for chartering the company's vessel SILJA EUROPA to Holland for six months starting from 1 January 2025 (with an option to extend the contract for another 7 + 6 + 6 months after that).

Stena RoRo takes delivery of GUILLAUME DE NORMANDIE

Stena RoRo has taken delivery of E-Flexer No. 12 – in a series of 15 vessels - from the Chinese shipyard CMI Jinling (Weihai). The ship is the GUILLAUME DE NORMANDIE and is long-term chartered to Brittany Ferries. In April next year, the ship will enter service on the Portsmouth – Caen route, replacing the NORMANDIE, which has sailed the route since 1992. This is the fifth of five ordered E-Flexer vessels for the Brittany Ferries fleet.

GREAT COTONOU joins the Grimaldi fleet and inaugurates the China-West Africa service

With the delivery of the GREAT COTONOU on 20 December at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd shipyard in Ulsan (South Korea), all six G5-class ro-ro multipurpose vessels are now fully operational in the Grimaldi fleet.

With length of 250 metres, beam of 38 metres and deadweight of 45,684 tonnes, the design of the GREAT COTONOU and her sister vessels is the result of a careful study of the needs of the Group and its customers: thanks to an innovative and completely customized internal configuration, these ships are able to transport 4,700 lane metres of rolling freight, 2,500 CEU (Car Equivalent Units) and 2,000 TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units). Compared to the previous G4-class, they have the same capacity for rolling freight while their container capacity is double.

New International Chamber of Shipping Secretary General announced

At a special meeting of the board, held on-line, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) have unanimously appointed Thomas A. Kazakos as its next Secretary General. Kazakos will replace Guy Platten who will be stepping down in June 2025. Kazakos has been the Director General of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, the representative National-Member Association of Cyprus at ICS, since 1995.

Carnival Corporation & plc 2024 full year report

Carnival Corporation & plc reported full year revenues hit an all-time high of USD 25 billion, over 15 percent higher than the prior year, while adjusted EBITDA reached USD 6.1 billion, over 40 percent higher than the prior year. 13.5 million passengers were carried, up from 12.5 million. Cumulative advanced booked position for full year 2025 is at an all-time high for both price (in constant currency) and occupancy.

Fjord1 signs 15-year contract for Sogn og Fjordane connections

A 15-year contract has been signed for Fjord1 to operate several Sogn og Fjordane connections, starting in November 2027. The contract covers several important ferry connections in Sogn og Fjordane: Måløy – Husevågøy – Oldeide, Isane – Stårheim, Askvoll – Fure – Værlandet and Rysjedalsvika – Rutledal – Krakhella. In addition, the contract includes an option for operation of the Askvoll – Gjervik – Fure connection.

Godby Shipping buys AURORA from Navimag

Godby Shipping announced that they agreed with Navimag, Chile, to purchase the ro-ro vessel AURORA, built in 1991 for Finnish owner Hollming under the name AHTELA.

Delivery will take place in January 2025 in Algeciras, Spain.

Insolvency of the FSG-Nobiskrug shipyard group

The Flensburg and Neumünster district courts have initiated insolvency proceedings for four companies in the Schleswig-Holstein shipyard group FSG-Nobiskrug. The companies affected are FSG-Nobiskrug Holding GmbH, Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft GmbH, Nobiskrug Yachts GmbH and FSG Nobiskrug Design GmbH with its shipyard sites in Flensburg and Rendsburg.

Tallink Grupp’s Supervisory Board extends term of office of Management Board Members

Tallink Grupp's Supervisory Board has made a decision based on the recommendation from Tallink Grupp's Chairman of the Management Board, Paavo Nõgene, to extend the terms of office of the group's Management Board Members Piret Mürk-Dubout and Harri Hanschmidt.

Harri Hanschmidt joined the company's Management Board on 4 February 2019 and his term of office have been extended by three years, effective from 5 February 2025.

Piret Mürk-Dubout joined the group's Management Board on 15 April 2019 and her term of office has also been extended by three years, effective from 16 April 2025.

DFDS November volumes: continued freight and passenger growth

DFDS' total freight volumes in November 2024 were 10.4% above 2023 and up 4.7% adjusted for the addition of Strait of Gibraltar routes in 2024, closure of Calais-Tilbury in 2023, and the sale of Oslo-Frederikshavn-Copenhagen in 2024, while the number of passengers in November 2024 was 37.6% above 2023 and up 22.4% adjusted for the above route changes.

Caronte & Tourist takes delivery of double-ender PIETRO MONDELLO

The 134-metre PIETRO MONDELLO for Caronte & Tourist has been delivered from the Turkish Sefine Shipyard. PIETRO MONDELLO is a near sister to the 2018-delivered ELIO, but with a number of technical changes, one being the addition of a 2 MWh battery pack.

Both LMG-designed vessels are fitted with dual-fuel LNG-capable engines and have capacities for 1,500 passengers and 290 cars each.
Just as ELIO, PIETRO MONDELLO is intended for the Messina Strait between Messina and Villa San Giovanni.

Cost of ferry crossings for summer 2025 revealed

Each year, Ferrygogo analyses the costs of ferry crossings. This year, they've done it again, diving into the data to see what you can expect to pay for a round trip with overnight stays. This year, they focused specifically on ferry crossings for two people, including a car, in the high season with overnight stays.

On average, you'll spend over €1,000 for a crossing for two people, a cabin, and a car.

Wasaline to evaluate battery enlargement and e-methanol conversion

Now, Wasaline has again asked for Foreship’s help to push forward with the ship’s green transition – this time by evaluating a battery enlargement and e-methanol conversion.

Uber Boat by Thames Clippers announced the UK's first fully electric cross-river passenger ferry

Uber Boat by Thames Clippers has announced that the UK's first fully electric zero-emission cross-river passenger ferry, ORBIT CLIPPER will launch in March 2025. Currently under construction at Wight Shipyard Co in East Cowes, Isle of Wight, this innovative vessel will provide an accessible, green and fast route across the Thames seven days a week, enabling over 20,000 Londoners and visitors to travel every weekday.

Brittany Ferries commits to Portsmouth with a 20-year contract

Brittany Ferries and Portsmouth announced that a 20-year contract has been signed with the port and city, which is expected to generate an estimated GBP 200 million in revenue during the period for the council-owned port.

Currently, Portsmouth welcomes more than 1.5 million Brittany Ferries passengers annually, making it one of the UK’s most popular ferry routes for travelling to France and Spain. Freight from Spain and France also relies on Brittany Ferries crossing as an essential trade route for the UK and Europe, with 200,000 lorries travelling through the port every year.

Wallenius Marine tests groundbreaking ship design for the world's first wind-powered PCTC vessel

Wallenius Marine is conducting advanced wind tunnel tests aimed at realising the world’s first wind-powered PCTC (Pure Car and Truck Carrier) vessel. The tests are being carried out in Gothenburg, at one of Europe’s most advanced wind tunnels, with wind speeds of up to 250 km/h.

Wallenius Marine has gathered with experts from RISE, KTH, and Oceanbird in Gothenburg for a series of crucial tests to validate the latest design for wind-powered PCTC vessels, a groundbreaking innovation in maritime transport. These tests will not only confirm the design but also contribute to the development of new data simulation models for wind-powered ships.
