La Meridionale adds NORMANDIE to its fleet from June 2025
La Meridionale announced that Brittany Ferries' NORMANDIE will be added to its fleet as of June 2025 for the Marseille-Tanger Med crossing, following the delivery of Brittany Ferries's E-Flexer GUILLAUME DE NORMANDIE early next year.
Fincantieri finalizes order with Crystal for a new high-end cruise ship
Fincantieri and Crystal announced the finalization of an order for the construction of one state-of-the-art high-end cruise ship, following the exercise of the option granted under the two-unit agreements disclosed to the market on 27 June. The value of this agreement, subject to financing and other terms and conditions, is considered as large.

"The beginning of 2024 was difficult with high interest rates, inflation, and a slowdown in economic growth. Yet many of the key figures showed an upturn when the Q3 report was completed. The Finnlines Group's revenue in January–September 2024 amounted to EUR 547.2 (513.2 in 2023) million. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation, EBITDA, amounted to EUR 140.8 (131.7) million.
DFDS Q3 2024 interim report
DFDS reported that revenue was up 11% to DKK 8.0bn in Q3, with organic growth at 4%. EBIT was reduced 11% to DKK 785m. Adjusted free cash flow of DKK 396m and CO2 ferry emission intensity lowered 1.6%.
Armas Trasmediterránea will operate the lines that link Melilla with Almería and Motril
Armas Trasmediterránea will operate the maritime lines that connect Melilla with the cities of Almería and Motril, two lines declared a public service obligation (OSP) by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.
The Directorate General of the Merchant Navy awarded the two routes for the next two years (plus two additional years), which Armas Trasmediterránea will begin to operate from January 2025.
Damen lays keel for first two of four fully electric ferries for BC Ferries
Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania laid the keel for the first two of four 81m fully electric ferries for BC Ferries. The keel laying ceremony marked an important milestone in the third phase of construction of the Island Class Ferries, which will bring the total number of Damen vessels in the BC Ferries fleet to 10.
During the recent second phase of the programme, Damen delivered four hybrid diesel-electric ferries. These reduced emissions vessels were intended to pave the way to the development of fully electric vessels.
DFDS launches a new freight ferry service between Italy and Egypt
DFDS launches a new direct ferry service between Egypt and Italy, marking a significant expansion in the Mediterranean region. The establishment of a reliable and efficient connection between Damietta in Egypt and Trieste in Italy will support the trade flows between North Africa and Europe.
With the introduction of this new line between Egypt and Italy, DFDS is integrating Egypt into its service network for the first time and launching the first freight ferry service between these markets in around a decade.
Stena Line terminates 80 positions and 30 consultants due to high inflation and increased costs
Stena Line announced that they are launching a cost-cutting programme to be able to carry out necessary future investments. The programme includes the termination of 80 positions and around 30 consultants in 2025. High inflation and rising prices due to the introduction of the European Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) have resulted in reduced purchasing power for Stena Line's passengers and freight customers. This, in turn, has led to a decline in passenger and cargo unit volumes.
DFDS 2024 outlook lowered by market slowdown and termination of purchase of Ekol Logistics
DFDS' EBIT outlook range for 2024 is revised following results below expectations driven by mainly a more widespread slowdown in Europe than previously expected as well as intensified competition in northern European land transport markets, the Mediterranean freight ferry market and termination of purchase of Ekol Logistics.
The current market conditions are expected to continue for the rest of the year whilst a rebound in activity was previously expected for the rest of the year.
American Cruise Lines announces more newbuilds and AMERICAN LEGEND delivery
American Cruise Lines announced that it has signed contracts with Chesapeake Shipbuilding for four more new ships, bringing the Line's total orderbook with Chesapeake to 10 ships over the next three years. All the newbuilds are expressly for the U.S. cruise market.
The 10 new ships from Chesapeake begin with the delivery of AMERICAN LEGEND. The newest Coastal Cat in American's fleet passed sea trials and is on schedule for its first cruise on 25 November. The remaining newbuilds on order will roll out every few months over the next three years.
European Space Agency launches the DECARDIS project with Awake.AI, ABB and Wallenius Marine to optimize ship-port operations
The European Space Agency (ESA) has initiated a new flagship project, Decarbonization through the Digitalization in Shipping (DECARDIS), together with optimization platform company Awake.AI, technology leader ABB and shipping company Wallenius Marine. The consortium, funded by ESA and led by Awake.AI, will collaborate on a port call optimization solution, which focuses on helping ships cut greenhouse gas emissions by overcoming inefficiencies in the ship-port interaction.
Guernsey selects Brittany Ferries as the preferred bidder to provide lifeline sea links
The States of Guernsey's Committee for Economic Development has selected Brittany Ferries as the preferred bidder to provide lifeline sea links for the island. At this stage Guernsey and Jersey have not reached a shared view on how to proceed. However, the Committee wanted to provide certainty for island residents and businesses following the joint tender exercise run during the last 10 months jointly with the Government of Jersey.
